Has anybody seen this? I know this isn't a Vol story but it's an SEC one so it kind of relates. Brad Gaines a player at Vanderbilt was a fullback back in 1989...in a game at Ole Miss he goes out for a short pass WITH HIS BACK TURNED he gets nailed on a very hard hit by Chuckie Mullins who gets becomes permanently paralyzed by the hit. Brad Gaines from the start feels somehow this is his fault and lives with this pain and guilt every day of his life. He's seen crying in every scene of this documentary...blaming himself. It's a good story. Mullins eventually dies two yr's later of an embolism which is related to the injury he suffered.

When Brad Gaines went to attend the funeral many of the Ole Miss players had a problem with him being there but reluctantly "allowed" him to be part of the team going to the funeral.

I think it is great that Gaines did all he could to be there for Mullins after the injury but I don't understand the self loathing he has and regrets and self blame for the incident. He visits Mullins grave 3 times every year...even on Christmas (which creates issues with his wife and two daughters).

All Gaines did was go out for a pass and Mullins..who was known as a vicious hitter was the one who speared Gaines in the back. For some reason Gaines cannot let this go and still blames himself. "If I had just run a different route...or something..and done something different...maybe Chuckie would still be here".

It's a tragic incident but my gawd man, quit blaming yourself. It's also ridiculous that the Ole Miss players would have issues with Gaines attending the funeral at first. As if it was Gaines fault in any way whatsoever. All he did was run a football play and was hit from BEHIND...and the guy still beats himself up and loathes himself to this day....for being the one that Mullins speared in the back.

Anyway, if you gusy have a chance it's "SEC Storied...It's Time" on ESPN U.

This was the first show I saw when I added the SEC network. I agree, Gaines has attached meaning to his own life through this incident that is not healthy. I grew up playing ball with Brad in Nashville and he was a fun loving, confident if not cocky kid. I'm sure this rocked his world in a way most of us can't relate to, but he needs to find a way to let it go. I don't think Chucky would want Brad to live his life this way.

They really didn't even absolve him of responsibility during the show. All the time i'm watching this i'm thinking "Okay...it's your fault...how?" I could understand some guilt on Gaines part if HE had been the one that had hit Mullins..ala Jack Tatum on Daryl Stingley...but all Gaines did was go out for a pass WITH HIS BACK TURNED to the player...and the hard hitting Mullins nailed him in the back...and somehow this is Gaines fault?

It's a tragic story and by all accounts Mullins was a great kid...but to blame yourself for this? And for the Ole Miss players to have issue with him on top of it?

Gaines is an emotional (obviously) guy... but wow.

Tragic event for both men involved. I can understand Gaines feeling guilty, but it wasn't his fault.
