Classic Spurrier

Georgia

On playing the Dawgs early: "I don't know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended."

On Georgia recruiting: "Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players, but when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don't understand that. What happens to them?"

Tennessee

On the Vols missing out on the Sugar Bowl during his Florida years: "You can't spell Citrus without U-T."

On Peyton Manning: "I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl."

Alabama

On recruiting: "In 12 years at Florida, I don't think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama ... Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours."

Florida State

On scandal in Tallahassee: "You know what FSU stands for, don't you? Free Shoes University."

On illegal hits against Danny Wuerffel: "He's like a New Testament person. He gets slapped up side the face, and turns the other cheek and says, 'Lord, forgive them for they know not what they're doing.' I'm probably more of an Old Testament guy. You spear our guy in the earhole, we think we're supposed to spear you in the earhole. That's kind of where we're a little different."

Auburn

On a fire at the football dorm that destroyed 20 books: "But the real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet."

Clemson

On the Death Valley nickname: "Most of our guys have never been to Death Valley. (LSU's stadium) is the Death Valley, isn't it? Or is there another one? There's two of them. That's right. There's two Death Valleys."

On the state of the South Carolina program (widely attributed, but probably not an original): "We aren't LSU and we aren't Alabama. But we sure ain't Clemson."

On Dabo Swinney's anger over the above quote: "I said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do? I didn't say it.' Smart people don't believe everything they read, and they don't believe hearsay. ... I guess Dabo believed it."

Yep. Good stuff.

And when asked of all the losses while he was the HBC of Florida, which was one of the toughest to get thru...it's the 2001 Tennessee game.

I saw it too. He wasn't well liked in Tennessee. Sreve was a QB at Science Hill High School in Johnson City Tennessee. Steve was a Senior at SHHS when I was a freshman at Elizabethton. I didn't play sports. Science Hill was our biggest rival in high school. At that time we were the Big 7 Confreence (Elizabethton, Erwin, Greeneville, Bristol, Kingsport (Dobyns Bennett), Johnson City, and Morristown. Steve lettered in 4 sports (football, basketball, track and baseball). We lived in northern VA- Sterling, while Steve was HC at Washington. I didn't think his program would work at Washington. The owners pretty much run the team. The NFL is a total different brand of football than the NCAA and the World Football League. Steve is better suited for college. I think Steve will retire as HC at South Carolina in probably 2 years. He's currently in his late 60's, probably 69.

I can remember when he was drafted by the 49ers and was backup behind Brodie. I was stationed at MacDill AFB from 1977-1980. Steve was dropped by the 49ers and a new NFL team was formed in Tampa (Buccaneers). They were terrible the first two years - 0-14 and 2-12. Steve was the starting QB the first year. Believe Doug Williams started the 3rd year. Any way I can remember telling Buc fans that if Doug had a good offensive front line the Bucs would be better. Well, I remember when Doug left Tampa and was traded to the Redskins. The rest is history was Doug led them to a Super Bowl. I remember when they played Denver and and the Broncos led 10-3. It was all Redskins after that.

That '01 game is one of the best games in college football history, IMO.

With everything that was on the line, and Tennessees futility playing in the swamp, it was incredible.

Fixed your post.

That game was the first of three steps to win the national title. UF failed in the first step, UT failed that following week in the second step.

Had UT gone on to win the SEC or national title, I'd be more inclined to agree with you.
