Latest on tweaking the SEC schedule - SEC Blog - ESPN

Is it me or do you since a little favoritism(see last year officating of Bummers games). Tennessee had 5 games with teams coming off bye weeks in 08 and nothing was said, even after we went 5-7. Now, Alabummer has 6 games schedule but, according to the SEC, that is not fair. Come on give me a break, SEC plz just announce that you will do whatever you can do to put Bummer back into the national championship game and be done with it.

Wasn't right in 08 for UT, and not right in 2010 for UA, but it was 4 SEC teams not 6 SEC teams like Bama is facing, either way it needs to be fixed.

If Bama loses two games this year and/or misses a BCS Bowl, will Saban catch heat or will the Bammers just excuse it due to schedule?

We hope it doesn't come to that.

By your 2010 schedule, it could be argued Tennessee would be a part of the conspiratory pattern the SEC is vigorously investigating.

May we recommend Florida, Georgia, or even LSU as the object of your Bye week consternation this year.

I know the Bammers were not too happy that several opponents last year (including us) had bye weeks before the game with Alabama. Oh boo hoo

That wasn't why we went 5-7.

I'm not going to cry for Alabama, either. First of all, Alabama has a bye week before playing LSU. Second, they're playing a first-year FCS startup (Georgia State) before Auburn, which is tantamount to a live scrimmage. The week before that, they play Mississippi State, which isn't beating Alabama if they get three bye weeks beforehand. And furthermore, it's not like Alabama doesn't have some control over its own schedule; if Tennessee can schedule byes before UF and Bama seemingly every year, then why can't Mal Moore figure out how to do the same?

I think I'd tell Bama that if they're going to embarrass the SEC by putting Georgia State on their schedule, they can shut up and deal with things. If you're going to schedule an FCS team, at least play one that's not made up of freshmen and JUCOs that weren't even good enough for the SoCon.

You do realize this is Bama's world. You are merely invited to participate once a year.

This year's invitation: Oct. 23, 2010.

I actually went back and researched the last few season schedules, and (as much as I hate to admit it) Bama has a real complaint here. They have faced far more teams coming off of bye weeks over the past few years than any other SEC school. UT has faced the 2nd most, while some teams have only faced 2 or 3 opponents coming off of bye weeks total over the last 5 or so years.

There needs to be more balance year to year, and we should care because UT has been on the wrong side of this more often than not.

We have bye weeks every year before our two most important games of the season. If we were good enough to actually beat UF or Bama right now, neither you nor anyone else would be complaining that Kentucky or Mississippi State gets a bye week against us. And frankly, if our program is at its usual standard, it doesn't matter if they do.

I've already said what I think about Alabama's complaints.

This is much ado about nothing. If Alabama feels differently, then Mal Moore needs to adjust his own scheduling to provide Alabama with more off weeks before big games. As I said before, note that Alabama is off before facing LSU and has a joke game before playing Auburn.

You get how many bye weeks each year? You haven't had 2 bye weeks since the 11 game schedule in 2005. Unless someone lengthened the season you won't.

That also, was the last time you used a bye against Florida. By the way, the other team that year, Bama. Which judging by my math seems to be the team you most would like to have two weeks to prepare.

Your argument flies in the face of your athletic department's determination to set their schedule.

LOL, Lets see is Slive can talk Tennessee out of that date.

I've been reading alot about Bama's bye week issue this year...apparently they're going to face 8 teams that have bye weeks before they play Bama...bless their hearts

My question is this...wasn't there a season recently where we played a similar schedule....maybe not 8 teams but something like 4-6 teams that had a bye before playing us?

If I'm wrong I'm wrong and please let me know....

If I'm not though....how screwed up is it that our similar situation was basically blown off yet when it happens to Bama...the current NC's and therefore darlin' of the SEC...the media is all over it and Slive starts considering implementing something to prevent it from happening again?

I think that Alabama has a good argument that it isn't 'fair' that they face so many teams coming off bye weeks.

But before the SEC went flitting off trying to change their schedule they should have asked a few basic questions first. How many opponents coming off a bye week prior to facing the same team is too many? Are we going to do something about this if it happens to another team in the future (i.e. is this a new policy or just a one off)? How do we 'control' this situation given that we schools have a lot of autonomy when scheduling their out of conference games?

Without answering those questions this absolutely reeks of favoritism because it's unclear that other teams that got into this situation would be helped out by the league.

That said, at most they manage to move one game this year and even that will be tough this soon before the season starts.

And I agree with the poster who said Alabama complaining about Auburn's bye week when they're coming off Georgia State that same week is ridiculous. I got an
earful from a Bammer friend of mine about Auburn's bye week on a short week but he didn't mention who Alabama was playing that prior week.

But the reception of schools being asked to move games next season has generally been something along the lines of, "Alabama is coming off a national championship. Why would I change my schedule to accommodate them?"

Exactly my reasoning as well.

Waaaaaaahhhhhh. Bammer needs a high chair from the SEC. Next they'll need to be spoon fed. Pathetic.
