Just the next step of the evolution of collegiate sports. The "big 5" will eventually be paired down to a big 4 and then you have created the platform for a playoff with built in tiers.

The larger schools are using the athlete stipend as the key to making the move that leaves other smaller schools out of the mix.

I actually think you might be right. If the power players are going to consolidate into a new division based around football, then the ACC has a ton of dead weight compared to the other four.

The SEC, Big 10, and Big XII could poach any school of value from the ACC and further consolidate who is splitting the money.

If they go to four or five big conferences they'll likely stop playing 1AA teams, which will have a major impact on AD funding for those schools.
