Senators, White House reach immigration deal - CNN.com

The proposed agreement would allow illegal immigrants to come forward and obtain a "Z visa" and -- after paying fees and a $5,000 fine -- ultimately get on track for permanent residency, which could take between eight and 13 years. Heads of household would have to return to their home countries first.
They could come forward right away to claim a probationary card that would let them live and work legally in the U.S., but could not begin the path to permanent residency or citizenship until border security improvements and the high-tech worker identification program were completed.

Not really sure what to say on this one. I almost have 2 different views from living out west and now back east.

(as OE says) Thoughts?

So basically, the govt. does nothing except try to collect some more money. Yea, sounds about right.

I just saw a press conference with Barbara Boxer patting Saxby Chambliss on the back. That alone tells me this bill is a piece of crap.

Yup, this bill is a piece of crap. Its sad that it took this long to do something about it, but unforunately the laws this bill is making will not be enforced just like the laws we have now that could have prevented ALL this turmoil.

It was a quick clip on Fox News. They were announcing the compromise and I guess Saxby was speaking since he's on the Ag committee and was talking about the impact on migrant workers. Feinstein was right behind him grinning and patted him on the back at one point.

When you try to make everybody happy, you end up making nobody happy.

Yep . . . In the end congress and the White House will hail it as some kind of achievement maenwhile the whole electorate is going to end up hating it.

I love reading the nasty comments about Chambliss on a few GA blogs. The man simply does what the WH wants him to.
