Is it in the Constitution or not??? I don't believe it is. In fact, the Constitution supports states having their own official religion if they want. One of the reasons I bring this up is because of the University of Michigan are building footbaths for Muslims so they can wash their feet when they pray. Ok, well I have no problem with the footbaths I have a problem with them using tax dollars to do it. Plus the ACLU says that the footbaths are secular and it doesn't violate the First Amendment. Talk about being hypocritical.

Muslims won't fund footbaths

Thoughts??

The ACLU needs to pick one view and stick with it. The footbaths are clearly "religion-specific". They liken it to providing extra security for a religious event but that is not religion specific.

Presumably the muslims wouldn't care if someone polished off a few and slid by to urinate on the way to the dorm. Any reaction beyond that of catching someone peeing on the sidewalk might indicate the religious nature of the baths.

Thinking how a riot or war could even result from a simple fraternity hazing incident.....pictures of something surface on the internet and a cartoon of Muhammed in Europe is nothing.....Michigan burned to the ground.

Would you have a problem with this if the local mosque or Muslim community group funded the footbaths, even though they would be located on state property? It seems like something like that could be arranged. I suppose that if you wanted to take it far enough, you could make them rent the land....

Personally, I think what the university doing it is fine. I just wish the ACLU would lay off everything religious (read: Christian). I think they way overstep the interpretation of the separation clause and specifically focus on Christianity since it is the dominant religion - in other words, they feel some "civil liberties" are more important to "defend" than others.

I think that, in general, that is a fair assesment. I am generally pretty disturbed by what the ACLU sets its focus on.

I don't have the link right now but a few years ago, the ACLU put out bylaws (or something like that) dictating what ACLU leaders could say about internal operations...

My guess is that the internal operations of the ACLU would involve the political wrangling equivalent to that within the UN...

Well considering Bob Barr works for them, I'd say you have some diametrically opposing viewpoints at morning meetings and by the water cooler.

I'm sure that I make a lot of spelling errors in my posts...but does the title of this thread bother anyone else every time you look at it? "Seperate" instead of "Separate"??

I think that it must bother me because it was one of those spelling mistakes that was drilled into me in school. I think that when we read "A Separate Peace"..I remember my teacher always saying note that it is SePARate and not SePERate..... :)
