With Chip Kelly just leaving UCLA & if memory serves recruiting is entering a “dead period”, I got to wondering… if players from UCLA (or any other school where this would apply) enter the portal during that time, can they still be recruited during a dead period or do they have to just enter the portal and wait?

If a coach leaves they have a window to enter the portal. I believe 2 weeks.

I knew about the 30 days, I’m curious if they have to decide to enter the portal during a “dead period” does that mean other teams have to wait to recruit them? Given the current NIL landscape that could be a risky proposition. Or can team go ahead and recruit them even though it is a dead period if they decide to enter the portal?

A coach leaving for a demotion is going to kill UCLA football. They haven‘t been good in a while but the right coach could have got them going pretty fast but Any player that feel’s like they can get picked up is gone. The coach recruited these guys and flat out jumped ship.

Moving to the Big Ten and lack of NIL structure within the program is going to kill UCLA football, not Chip Kelly leaving.

Unlimited transfers + NIL is going to quickly destroy college sports. If you sign a deal there should be repercussions for breaking it and moving schools. In the NFL you can't take your toys and leave for another team because you don't get PT, you're under contract. Make it so the player has to pay back the previous year's NIL $ if he transfers (exceptions would be early draftees and grad students).

Since no one actually answered the OP’s question…I believe players can enter the portal during the dead period, but cannot be contacted by coaches during this period. Once the dead period is over, contact can begin (but let’s be honest, in football especially, there is no dead period).

They cant officially enter it unless it is in the window, but there is a 30 day window with a hc change

NIL can't be tied to schools, per NCAA rules.

They can enter the portal, they can't be recruited during the dead period. Since classes have started they couldn't actually transfer until summer session anyway.

So if they enter the portal now will they have to drop out of the their current school?
