Is Pearl, with his cockiness, antics, and baiting of fans the basketball version of Spurrier? Now before you lash out and threaten to stone me to death for comparing the two, think about it for just a second. Spurrier and the visor, Pearl and the Orange Jacket. Spurrier throwing the visor, Pearl screaming his head off. Spurrier saying you can't spell Citrus without UT, Pearl blatantly taunting opposing fans by putting in a player they are teasing.

I think they have more than a little in common.

i said the very same thing in another thread last week i believe....

there very well could be some comparisons between the two....now the one that matters will be w's and l's. antics aside, we'll see if BP has the same kind of run in the SEC as Spurrier, and then we can start drawing up comparisons.....

but i know what road your going down, and he certianly has the potential to be hated as much as spurrier, that's for sure!

The jacket and the visor have NOTHING in common...the jacket is out of respect for Coach Mears and his legacy with Vandy and UK...while I see your point b/c fans from other schools probably hate or will hate CBP the way we hated Spurrier...I think you're stirring the pot.

...and I'm not really sure how cocky CBP is. When Spurrier was at UF he talked more $h!t than the guy that pumps my septic tank...Pearl seems pretty respectful when it comes to talking about other programs...namely florida

I actually think that is a good comparison..

even more with KY and Vandy though....he named KY day one as the team we'd have to compete with, despite UF's recent success.

He may not be as cocky as SS, but he does a flare about him like SS. and if it translates in to w's on the same kind of consistent level, then great.

No, I think that you are WAY off in this comparison. Like LIO said, Pearl isn't cocky, he's confident. There's a big difference there. He's an extroverted person with a lot of energy. Like every other Vol fan, I've read all his quotes, watched him on show and listened in interviews and not one time did anything strike me as cocky. He's a very generous guy and goes out of his way to give props to other teams, other programs at UT and other coaches. He never belittles them like Spurrier likes to do.

before you lash out and threaten to stone me to death for comparing the two, think about it for just a second. Spurrier and the visor,

Pearl wore the orange jacket to honor Coach Mears. He's only wearing that jacket at the Vandy and UK games. It's part of Pearl trying to connect the current Vol basketball fans to the good old days of Tennessee basketball when Mears was here. It's a part of tradition, something that Pearl is VERY interested in. Unless Spurrier wore his visor to honor a coach of the past, there's no comparing the two.

Spurrier throwing the visor, Pearl screaming his head off.

Spurrier throwing the visor = temper tantrum
Pearl screaming his off = Coaching and motivation

Spurrier saying you can't spell Citrus without UT, Pearl blatantly taunting opposing fans by putting in a player they are teasing.

They were both having fun, but I don't see much similarity in that either. Pearl put Bradshaw back in because he was having with the LSU fans, not taunting them. If anything, I think that LSU fans appreciated it and thought it was funny. Think about it. LSU pretty much had their way with us and at the end was Pearl angry or upset? No, he was playing around with the LSU fans. He enjoys the games and the atmosphere.

Bruce is to coaching as the Harlem Globtrotters are to basketball. Energy, skill, showmanship and a lot of fun.

Good point OWB...had that been Spurrier, he would have made some comment about the number of trailers he saw in Baton Rouge...Spurrier is a crybaby and does not compare to CBP...

Let's be honest though . . . . We won't notice ANY negative traits until Pearl actually loses a little bit.

That's true I guess. I don't think Pearl will venture down the dark roads though. I think he's a positive person all in all.

Who says the man is going to start losing?? He has one of the best winning percentages in coaching and has been a winner everywhere he has been. He is a great recruiter, and a great seller of the facilities and for the university of tennessee. He convinced chism, tabb, and crews to come to UT when they had never seen him coach a game for tennessee. Wait untill you see the recruits he will pull in the next upcoming years.

Pearl has class, period. Listen to his show after the game and one of the first things he does is give the other team credit.

You insult CBP with a comparison of anything other than wins and instant impact in the SEC.

I'm not saying that he's going to suddenly become a .500 coach, just pointing out that he is in the middle of one of the great honeymoon periods any coach has ever enjoyed.

Well, I did post this thinking that there was some irony in that Vol fans seem to hate in Spurrier some of the very things they adore in Pearl. I''m not saying you guys are the only hipocrites on the planet when it comes to being sports fans, but c'mon. Spurrier's winning and his ultra-competitive nature is what made you loathe him. Now here we have Pearl who is winning a lot more than folks thought possible and he is about as competitive as they come (see getting thrown out of kids' bball gymnasium, post-game comments, claims to want to be the most annoying coach, etc., as proof).

Seriously, if the roles were reversed, would you not see from my perspective that it seems like UT fans are willing in the case of Pearl to celebrate exactly what they condemn in Spurrier?
