Serious question

Seriously, if the roles were reversed, would you not see from my perspective that it seems like UT fans are willing in the case of Pearl to celebrate exactly what they condemn in Spurrier?

No. It was never Spurrier's genius or ability to win that made me despise him. It was his better-than-you attitude and the fact that that NOBODY ever beat him, just his team gave the game away. To compare Bruce Pearl to Steve Spurrier is ludicrous, lawgator. How many snide remarks has Bruce Pearl made about an opposing team or it's fans? How many of our losses has he marked down to our team just not getting it done as if the idea of us being beaten by ANYBODY was too much to fathom?

Don't get me started. It could be a long night.

Excuse me milo, but what would someone with a grand total of 24 months experience with Tennessee sports know about program homerism? Were you here when Spurrier made his insulting remarks? Were you here when he threw his little tantrums on the sidelines?

Didn't think so.

Comparing Bruce Pearl to Steve Spurrier is grounds for banishment from this board in my opinion.

Who amongst the regular posters here wouldn't want Spurrier to take over UT if Fulmer left? I'd say that 75 percent of the folks on here would throw a party if that happened. And of the 25 percent that publicly complained about it, more than half would probably secretly rejoice.

I would root for Ala -gag - bama before I'd call Steve Spurrier "Coach".

honesly, one more bad year and i would take just about anybody over fulmer, the guy is too vanilla for my tastes

I think there are some legitimate comparisons between Spurrier and Pearl, but that doesn't necessarily include likability.

I beg you . . . Don't take this thread there. Please....

Sorry Emain . . . I was half joking. It's not criticizing Fulmer that I was reacting to. It's just that we've had our fill of threads veering off topic into discussions of Fulmer's coaching ability. They always end up the same way.

I know that was probably not your intention though and you were just making a general comment. :peace:

Back to the topic . . . . I think the comparison between Pearl and Spurrier is the way they took over mediocre teams and immediately changed the face of their programs with new systems, new attitudes and big personalities.

As emotional as Pearl is, I think it's only a matter of time. :D

He threw his jacket in the UF game.
See what I mean. :D

It's only a matter of time before he starts talking about what a great venue Rupp Arena is to hold the opening round of the NIT.

I like the comparison... I have only followed Vols football for two seasons now so the antagonism towards Spurrier really isn't there for me. I think he's pretty entertaining and I can definitley see some similarities between the two. The only reason some here refuse to see the connection is program homerism. Mentioning Basketball Moses and the Visored One in the same setnence is blasphemy... Even if it's true.

MILO your in over your head. I understand you are new so I will let this slide. But the head cock has no class, never has and never will.

yep...you had to be there in the 90's to understand...BP, while i'll even conceded i do see why the comparison is brought up and see some similarities, does have one quality that Spurrier never had......class. BP has shown nothing but respect for his opponents. Spurrier made it a habit to jab at his rivals as much as he could. really showed no respect for the teams he played against. When BP starts doing what SS did (FSU stands for Free Shoes U., Can't specll Citrus w/out UT etc....), then we can compare all we want.

Look at the way UT fans feel about bear Bryant. He owned UT for many years but he is not hated for one reason, he won with class. Granted he was as dirty as a Chi-O's knees at formal but he outwardly respected the rivalry, UT and the other coach. SOS did none of that and that is the reason for the hatred. It goes a long way back.

I really did not mean to get emotions running THIS high. Just an observation about similar temperaments between the two. I haven't seen Pearl enough to know if he is going to be at the antagonistic level of Spurrier. Does seem well on his way, though. LOL.

Why am I reminded of that guy on TV, Erkel...

Is Pearl, with his cockiness, antics, and baiting of fans the basketball version of Spurrier? Now before you lash out and threaten to stone me to death for comparing the two, think about it for just a second. Spurrier and the visor, Pearl and the Orange Jacket. Spurrier throwing the visor, Pearl screaming his head off. Spurrier saying you can't spell Citrus without UT, Pearl blatantly taunting opposing fans by putting in a player they are teasing.

I think they have more than a little in common.

In deed they do have like antics. That said, there is still a road to travel for Bruce Pearl to go down as one of the top college coaches of all time, as is Spurrier in my opinion.
