I'm not defending any one quarterback in this question, but, we're all aware that Dobbs is having issues. But, here on VN, everyone seems to think that Ferguson is now the next coming of Peyton (figuratively).

So my question is, what evidence do you all have that Ferguson is going to be that much better than Dobbs, other than the fact that CBJ chose to burn Dobbs's RS vs. Ferguson's? No one has seen Ferg play at this level, and Dobbs has had to start as a freshman QB in a lion's den, sans last night vs. Vandy.

I'm just wondering why all the "expected" hype around Ferg. And, admittedly, I don't know any more about those two QBs than what we all knew from their HS film and recruitment ratings. Is it all just opinion being misrepresented as fact because most of us are sick of seeing poor QB play that we, by default, assume Ferg is going to be great and then state it on VN?

My mind is just a'wandering with this question right now. And FTR, my opinion is, let's let Dobbs get the season overwith before we burn him at the stake (unless, of course, he doesn't beat UK... then, well...). Then, and I pray to the Almighty that losing to UK doesn't happen, we can start looking at Ferg for next year.

The backup is always the best player. The incoming recruit is always the freshman superstar. This fan base always prefers the unknown.

Ferguson offers hope to the masses because he's the only QB on the roster we haven't seem $#!+ himself in a game yet.

But on a more serious note, I'd say what many people like about him is his arm strength. He's been compared to Tyler Bray in that he has a strong enough arm that he can and will try to fit the ball in small windows. None of our QBs seem to be too great at reading a defense, so having someone like bray who can throw caution to the wind and complete passes based on arm talent is an appealing idea to many.

All of this is pure conjecture because we've never seen him play big boy football yet, but I think that's part of the reasoning for many.

Truth.

These are the type things I'm looking for in responses with this thread. Thanks. :hi:

Man I know that freshmans are not suppose to come in and be all that but I remember when Clausen started as a freshman and he could atleast throw the ball down field and make pretty good decisions. Then we come on Dobbs he looks awful! He looks like he needs a couple more yrs of highschool. I'm just hoping Riley is better than what we have seen this yr if not we are going to be as bad as we was this yr.

Many of the media as well as some former players that have talk shows such as Jason Swain and Troy Fleming have all said Ferguson is the best QB on the team. Lets remember, he was 2nd on the depth chart behind Worley and would have come in vs. Bama if not for the injury he had that sidelined him until the Vandy game.

Because if Fergy sucks too we can forget becoming a great team again for another 5 years. As far as I know Butch is not recruiting a QB.

This is a good point too. If Ferguson doesn't turn out to be better than the other QBs we have, then we have to wait until the 2015 season to see somebody else. And that somebody will be another 18 year old.

To be perfectly honest - with this offense - we are always going to need two skilled quarterbacks ready to play - because one will inevitably be banged up during the season.

No one has any evidence, not a clue. Only hearsay from some insiders that Ferguson was ahead of Dobbs. Also, Ferguson made a road trip, I think Oregon, that Dobbs didn't. Finally, I think Ferguson was ahead of Dobbs on the depth chart early on.

Otherwise, it's just all hope and desperation.

Edited, cause I don't want to wake up sober and look at my stupid comments.

Maybe I can lead by example, probably not.

Great points OP. I agree- it's the unknown. Our best bet for next year is that Worley comes back healthy. I can't believe I just typed that, but that is our best chance to win 6/7 games. A redshirt freshman QB that has never played a snap is not the answer. He needs reps, as well as Dobbs, but they will be most effective watching from the sidelines.

The GOAT Peyton Manning himself would suck if he was forced to run the bearcat spread.

He is recruiting a q b but the one he wants is committed to UNC State bUTch won't go for a q.b.just to fill a slot He wants the ones that fit his idea of a q.b. who will do well for us.

I was watching the Locker Room on TV tonight, with Troy Fleming and Fred White agreeing with the same and they said that the players they have spoken to,think the same thing

it was a shame that he was injured,we probably would of seen him as the starter now,a QB that could throw down the field for more than a few yards and the Vols win easily against Vandy

I don't understand why people don't question the receivers. I'm my opinion they are not any better than qb position

I just want to escape Kentucky with a win. I know that we aren't going to a bowl but man would it be abysmal to lose to them this year. Play Dobbs, escape Lexington with a win and we will lick our wounds in the offseason and have a serious QB competition. Shoot for an eight win season with a bowl game next year with the new kids coming in and then I expect to be legit in 2015.
