No, they wouldn't have made a difference. It may have been closer perhaps, as Lane was really out of his league today. Heck, we don't even know if Pili is any good at this level. Ultimately, we were outcoached on both sides of the ball. An important game on the road, against a team we should beat (I don't care about the history), and despite starting out of the gate well, when adversity hit us, we puckered up and didn't respond. And this from a large roster full of seniors. Where is the leadership? Too many undisciplined stupid penalties and when it got out of hand in the 2nd quarter we played soft. Game was essentially over at halftime to the point where Florida just sat on the ball the entire 2nd half. Milton has issues, but as others above stated, this coaching staff doesn't trust him. If he can't run the offense to its fullest extent, so be it but don't handcuff him either and become so predictable that a high school defense could contain us. That is on the coaches, especially Heupel. And while the players around him need to step up too, there are some players that tend to inspire those around them to perform above their heads and he "ain't" it, no matter what the other players state. Our so-called "high-powered" offense only managed 16 points and when they had chances to make it interesting in the 2nd half, they also "puckered" up.
Defensively, I've seen enough. I'm not sold on Banks. If you have defensive players who are afraid of contact and can't tackle, yet you continue to play them, that is on the coaches. Our secondary is still poor and we had a very pedestrian offense push us around when it mattered. That is not a very good Florida team. I wouldn't mind losing necessarily if we actually looked decent while doing so. Lack of accountability all around. Will see how they respond next week. We still have a long season ahead of us and can have a good year, but frankly it is disappointing "how" we lost and not simply that we lost. Those who have stated "last year was a fluke", I hope are wrong but this team is going to have to prove it on the field. The SEC doesn't appear to be full of a bunch of world beaters, but UT hasn't proved they are a good team either this year. And while there were some badly officiated plays, I have zero confidence this offense would have capitalized on them. We had the ball for the bulk of the 3rd quarter and only managed 3 pts.
Heupel may need to take his "player's coach hat" off and watch some classic Mike Leach videos and tear into his team a bit. Winning 11 wins last year doesn't mean jack in 2023.
