UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad won't play tonight against Indiana State - CBSSports.com

The NCAA has not cleared UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad to play in the season-opener on Friday night against Indiana State, sources told CBSSports.com.

The NCAA, which has been investigating Muhammad's ties to a pair of financial advisors, among other issues, is expected to issue a statement later tonight.

Muhammad is arguably the top freshman in the entire country. CBSSports.com documented the concerns back in February with a two financial advisors. Muhammad was not allowed to play in the team's summer trip to China and the 6-foot-6 wing and has missed extensive practice time dealing tithe ankle and shoulder injuries.

There was some thought to the fact that even if Muhammad was cleared in time for Friday night's game, he wouldn't be able to play due to the shoulder injury. However, once source close to the situation said that he'd "definitely give it a go", especially with the scrutiny he's been under for much of the past year.

Muhammad is the cornerstone of a freshman class that is expected to put UCLA back on the national map. Ben Howland and his staff also landed Kyle Anderson, arguably the best passer in the nation, big man Tony Parker and wing Jordan Adams. The 6-foot-8 Anderson was recently cleared by the NCAA.

His dad... Not so lucky

Shabazz Muhammad's father facing federal charges - CBSSports.com

Ron Holmes, father of former UCLA star Shabazz Muhammad, has been indicted on federal bank fraud and conspiracy charges. He is being detained in Las Vegas pending a detention hearing, according to a report in the Las Vegas Review Journal.

CBSSports.com's attempt to reach Holmes early Friday by phone was unsuccessful.

Holmes has long been a controversial figure in basketball circles because of several away-from-the-court developments that clouded Muhammad's amateur career. The family was thoroughly investigated by the NCAA prior to Muhammad ever playing at UCLA because of questionable financial dealings that were first reported by CBSSports.com, and a Los Angeles Times article published in March caught Holmes lying about his son's age.

Beyond that, Holmes has a criminal past.

He pleaded guilty in 1999 to using fraudulent bank statements in order to obtain mortgages and had to, according to records, pay a restitution fee of approximately $78,000 to banks and credit unions. Now the U.S. attorney's office is trying to recover more than $2.5 million from Holmes and several associates, all of whom are alleged to have obtained "mortgage loans by fraudulent means to buy houses" from 2006 to 2009.

Holmes once played college basketball at USC.

Muhammad is expected to be a lottery pick in June's NBA Draft.
