Hey guys, I would very much like any input you have on car recommendations.

I am wanting a used hatchback/wagon that is practical, reliable, and fuel-efficient for under 30k. Preferably no older than 2015.

I'm leaning towards an Outback at this moment. The owners I know have really good things to say about them. What are your thoughts?

Subaru has one of if not the highest customer loyalty ratings for a reason. It’s a well built car that fills a niche. The all wheel drive system is very good and it’s the go to in the wagon / hatchback market. My kid drives one we passed down. It’s 12 years old 210k miles and we’ve had to do very little in the time we’ve had it.
Major services were a head gasket and a hang bearing replacement.
I’d go with Subaru. And that comes from someone with 20+ years in the car business and works for a different manufacturer

You cant go wrong with a well-maintained Subaru. Toyotas and Hondas are tanks as well. Not hatchback but we've had Acura (Honda) MDXs...get 300k miles with car. Currently have an Acura RDX which is a little smaller and more hatchback-ish. No complaints on either.

I'd still be driving my 1986 Subaru wagon if that dingleberry from Illinois hadn't run that red light...

When I first started reading I immediately thought of the outback. My wife has driven one for the last 7yrs and it has been a great car. Still chugging along at around 140k miles right now

Another vote for Subaru. I had a Forester when I lived in Wyoming and it was an awesome car. Great safety rating.

Since Subaru seems to be the #1 recommendation, don't overlook the Crosstrek. You can probably get a brand new one, loaded, for 30 grand.

Also, check out the new Nissan Kicks (it replaces the Juke).

millinials, millenals, young'uns ;)
Another vote for a Subaru, the $3800 I paid for an 89 model wagon with 60K miles seemed like a bargain. A deer killed it for me with 162K miles and insurance company gave us $3600 4 years later. I own 5 Toyotas and an old Chevy but that Subaru held a great place as far as good vehicles.

It's hard to go wrong with Subaru, Toyota, and Honda. Since you want a wagon Subaru is pretty much the king of that.

We bought a new Outback in April 2016, with the 6-cyl engine, and it's a real hoss. I've always been partial to Boxer engines, having once owned a '73 911T for 20+ years, and a couple BMW motorcycles (still have my '81 R100RT). The Outback started out as mine but soon became my wife's daily driver (in place of the Tiguan which we still have too...), as I mostly drive an F-150 for work anyways. She likes the power. Subaru's are among the most popular vehicles in both Colorado and Alaska... I was in Alaska on a short vacation this summer and saw Outbacks everywhere... there's even a place in Anchorage that rents out Subarus.

I hate when that happens. Reminds me of the ill-fated 914 Porsche I enjoyed for a brief 18 months in 1978-79 until I got run into a concrete abutment under I-45 (by an illegal in a Camaro lol) going to work one morning a few weeks after moving to Texas... proved how hard-headed I am to walk away from that one after breaking the windshield with my noggin...

I have a Subaru Outback wagon. 175000 miles on it. No signs of slowing down. I've owned 3 Subarus.

Subaru is the Montana state car... they are everywhere. I like a few of the models, but some of the SUVs need to be updated in style.

A used wagon/hatchback for under 30K? How about a brand new Tucson Sport? You can buy a new 2018 for 22K with power seat, heated seat, 7" touchscreen and Sirius/XM (which I must have when traveling-and they still renew for 8 dollars a month if you ask) rear air and the larger engine than the standard Tucson. My 2015 Tucson Sport has 70,000 on it and has had zero problems. We average 28 MPG. If Hyundai scares you my experience has been good. My dad got a Sonata, put 150K on it then gave it to my son. My daughter still has an Elantra with 160K trouble free miles. For my last family sedan I switched from the Accord to the Sonata because the new Accord seats hurt my back and the Sonata was so much cheaper. I put 150K on it and then traded it on my 2015 Tucson.
