I lived in BR right after Stovall was hired to replace him thru the Arnsparger years. Stovall recruited very well especially with La kids & Arnsparger won with them. The wheels came off after Arnsparger left. Players wanted asst coach Mike Archer promoted and instead of hiring Steve Spurrier, who interviewed. They went with Archer. Then they hired Hallman & DiNardo. THAT set them back a decade
Saban thought he left claimed 2 conference and a national title. I’d say that was extremely successful. I’m not saying who would come, go, stay or anything else. I’m only pointing out that the documentary talked him up like he would do great things had tragedy not occurred. While you’re correct that it will never be known that was what I recall from it. Who knows maybe he would have sucked. The narrative was he would have been very successful there. I was a toddler when it occurred. I’m just recalling from the best I can remember the show.
