Apparently several hundred Hollywood filmmakers are petitioning for his release.

Filmmakers demand Polanski's release - CNN.com

URICH, Switzerland (CNN) -- Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar and Martin Scorsese have "demanded the immediate release" of fellow filmmaker Roman Polanski, who was arrested in Switzerland on a U.S. arrest warrant related to a 1977 child sex charge. A supporter displays a "free Polanski" tag on his shirt during the Zurich Film Festival.

They were among 138 people in the film industry who signed a petition against the arrest.
Polanski was on the way to the Zurich Film Festival when Swiss police detained him in response to the American warrant.
The filmmaker pleaded guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor but fled before he could be sentenced. He settled in France, where he holds citizenship. Investigators in the United States say Polanski, then 43, drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl.
His victim has also said she doesn't want him to serve jail time. She has an out of court settlement with him years ago, and has stated her desire for this story to go away.

Let the Hollywood elite sign their petitions. It still doesn't make it right. Whether the victim was paid off or wants the story to be hushed, he broke the law. He deserves to be punished and rightly should be. Pervert.

not only did he break the law, but he was found guilty in a jury trial. He skipped town to avoid jail time. Unless he is pardoned by the President (which not even Bill Clinton would do, and he pardoned Mark Rich) he should be extradited and put in jail for his crime.

It's not as if he's lived a life of seclusion and poverty in the intervening years.

Time may have a way of healing wounds, but it doesn't change the law... which he admittedly broke. I guess Madoff should have skipped town with his billions and then asked for forgiveness 30 years from now.

He should serve the time for his conviction and have a few years added for fleeing the country. Send a message to those who believe they can circumvent the law because they have the means.

Who cares if his victim took a payoff, he still has a debt to pay to society.

if by "his sentence" you mean "thrown into a woodchipper", then yes - he should serve his sentence.

i don't get why this is even a debate.

Here's the arguements for and against, that I've read:

Cons:
He's 76
He hasn't committed any other crimes in the last 30 years (that we knows of)
The victim doesn't want him to go to jail now

Pro's:
No statue of limitations on these type of crimes
He's plead guilty already (no question of guilt)
Sends the wrong message to allow someone to go unpunished

i read the girls statement at the trial on smoking gun a while ago. it was 100% rape and he should serve time for it. it's really disgusting that there is even a debate about this.

come on droski, its been 32 yrs ago. no need to bring it back up.

on a serious note they had his wife's (that was killed by the manson clan) sister on the Today show this morning and she was talking about how wrong it would be to put him back in jail, and that he wouldn't get a fair trial here, and how he is such a humanitarian. it was disgusting

He should be extradited and made to serve his sentence, of that I dont think there should be any doubt.

However if this happens I'd like to think that the US would examine their own extradition policy that seemingly consists of ignoring requests for extradition of its citizens, while demanding the same from other nations. It has to work both ways, currently it does not.

This is one of the cental themes of the democratic party!

Hollywood, and their support, should be an indication to everyone else of how to vote in ANY matter.

One of the arguments that a columnist used in RP's favor is that his parents were in the holocaust. She goes on to suggest him going to prison would cause him to relive those horrors - apparently he's suffered enough...

1...2...3 Awwwwwwwwww, poor baby.
