Should the winner of the Nextel Cup Series get an automatic position in the Nextel Cup Chase each year?
Opinions? Does this make it too easy for the winner of the CHASE?
Would this put less pressure on the previous years CUP Champion?

I don't think so. They'll still try their best to finish as high as possible, unless they have a terrible season.

It's an interesting thought. I'd say that if they did that, NASCAR would need to set up the points so that the defending champ receiving the exemption would be maybe an extra 100 points behind 10th place in order to keep guys from coasting through the first 26 races.

They've already made it to where the top twelve will make the Chase. If you're the defending champion and can't handle the pressure of finishing in the top third of the points through 26 races, you don't deserve a chance to make the Chase just for what you did last year.

Speaking of the perks for past champions, I read the other day where the past champions provisional has been limited to 6 per year. Should be 0, but 6 is a start... if they had instituted that rule late in Darrell Waltrip's career, he wouldn't have made a race after March.

No way they'd ever go to 0. The last thing NASCAR wants is for JG or Jr to blow an engine or put it in the wall during Qualifying and miss a race.

After reading what you posted . . . I think you're right. Increasing the number of drivers to 12 is enough of a safety net. Adding more than that effectively makes the Chase the equivalent of the NBA playoffs.

I'm a Jr. fan and all... but he has no use for a past champion's provisional. :)

See . . . NASCAR hypes the guy so hard that I lumped him in with people who've actually won something.

There's no need for a past champions provisional. As long as you're in the top 35, which is pretty much everyone except for guys like Morgan Shepherd and Derrick Cope, then you get unlimited provisionals.

Heh... you could've easily did the same thing with Kasey Kahne, except they were doing it for him before he even won a race.
