SI: About The VOLS

Was this SI writer a UT grad. He is pretty optimistic about everybody's talents. After last season, these nice comments may be a bit inflated. Prove me wrong Vols.

That article was depressing to me:

2nd in Rush Defense
54th in Pass Defense

85th Passing Offense
80th Rushing Offense

9 total starters returning.

I'm not ready to say that the passing defense is a real strength of this team, considering how they played last year with probably the #2 pass rush. Neither does the rushing game look that impressive. 80th last year and losing 4 of 5 starters on the O-line. I didn't realize the passing D or the Rushing O was that bad last year. Everyone seemed to blame everything on the passing game. The actual stats are eye-opening, assuming they are accurate.

I don't think the defensive stats from last year mean all that much. The offense was so bad at staying on the field and gaining any sort of field position that they coninually hung the defense out to dry and left them on the field way too long.

Thats all true, but UT's problems wth the secondary aren't really knew. I was half expecting Slade to be dismissed at the end of last season.

Using the # of returning starters as a main credential for success/failure is overrated, IMHO.

It definitely matters, but there have been numerous numerous numerous (and I mean numerous!) occasions where an offensive or defensive unit has improved with less returning starters or regressed with more returning starters.

For years Tennessee has had to compensate with a good Rush D to make up for the Pass D. It's as Tennessee as running up the middle.

This is true. I'd say besides Jason Allen, and maybe Rashad Baker, we haven't had a great DB come out of UT in a long while (Also, I think Johnathon Wade will break out next year). Julian Battle and Gibril Wilson count, because they were both JUCO transfers, so much of their skills were acquired before they came here. Anyway, Slade needs to start producing. We've been churning out plenty of good linebackers and D-linemen, and it's time we become a DB factory, as well.

Considered in a different light, our willingness to attack the offensive backfield with LBs, Safeties, and even corners, can leave the defensive backfield extremely vulnerable if we fail to get to the QB(or if the QB's mobility gets him out of the rush)...
