Many of us hold memories of John Ward in reverence and justifiably so. For those of you too young to remember, his predecessor, George Mooney, was not as colorful as John Ward, nor did he paint quite as brilliant a verbal picture, but, in my opinion, his delivery style was more professionally polished. Mooney was the Voice of the Vols from 1952-1967 and he was the broadcaster of record during the undefeated 1956 season and Doug Dickey's resurrection of Tennessee's program in the mid 1960s. He is also generally credited with having been the founder of the Vol Navy in 1962. Here are film (and audio) clips from some of his signature play calls, including the legendary 1956 duel with Georgia Tech and "The Stop" against Billy Cannon and LSU in 1959: Vol Network Announcer George Mooney Dies - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics.

(1) Field Goal: "Gooda"

(2) T.D.: "What did he do? He just scored, that is what he did. No flags on the play. No siree. No flags on the play.

(3) T.D.: Touchdown! Big Orange. It is a down pour.

(4) " Ladies and Gentlemen, the Tennessee Volunteers are the 1998 National Champions by a score of 23 - 16 over the Florida State Seminoles"

I didn't see any clips from UT-Ga Tech '56. The only TD that day was a one-yard run by Tommy Bronson after Majors completed a 46-yd pass to Buddy Cruze.

Wish I could understand how you guys aren't so freaking annoyed every time you hear/heard his play calls.

You are correct. I saw the 6-0 score in favor of Tennessee and made the mental connection with the '56 game. However, that game was played at Grant Field in Atlanta, whereas this film clip was from a home game at Neyland, perhaps the '65 game which we ultimately won 21-7.

Just remember that this thread really wasn't about John; it was about his predecessor, George Mooney. Unfortunately, it was derailed almost immediately.
