Simple Solution: Each time a team is penalized, award the opposing teams points based on the infraction.

There is enough money in CFB to make the refs full time employees, with grading systems, rewards, punishments, etc. They should be evaluated each game and then culled by their performance. Give bonuses for proper calls, impartiality, and correct their mistakes. Maybe they even clean the game up a little and greatly reduce things like holding and improper tackling techniques from the game.

If you make it a desirable job with competitive salaries and benefits, you’ll have the best chance of getting the best talent and outcomes.

Want to know why refs are so bad now? Just drive over to any little league game next Spring and Summer and watch 75% of the parents act like complete fools and imbeciles and treating refs and umps like they are sub human as opposed to real people doing something they enjoy because they love kids and the game. Who would volunteer or be paid $50 bucks or so to be verbally abused by delusional and abusive parents for 2 hours? There’s your answer - and believe me, I know. My son is 16 and has spent his entire life in baseball. It’s sickening

I think that this would only empower the refs even more than they are now. Pi$$ em off and they now call/not call holding, for example
Yep, I think most all refs don't cheat on purpose, they may have a inner bias that they do not confront or their not even aware of. They can choose not to call on certain teams that they may like the coach more or that was their team growing up or if a certain team wins it helps their main team. They can justify it by saying to their self I didn't make a bad call I just missed that one or ignored it. Somehow they figure that's not really cheating.

This is sobering reality. Our society has deteriorated.

They are pretty much there already. I can’t imagine a points based system helping the situation at all, in fact, it would likely make the problem worse.

Imagine a critical game being decided by the 1 point awarded to a given team for a questionable call - not a controversial one, but one that could go either way.

$50!! Hell for several years I called as many as 2-3 games a night for nothing and enjoyed every minute of it (nearly!). Was called any name you can think of. Never bothered me (can't say the same for my wife and kids two who played baseball ball). Even had a coach pull his team out of a state tourney game (he was bared from coaching for a few months, coached more than one sport) Once had a called appealed to the Little League head office (called upheld). There are this type things happening all the time and many much worse. The thing is you can't let them bother you. You are gonna make mistakes. You just can't get caught up in the excitement of the game which seems to be what happens way too often.

Per all the posts above from the experienced folks in this matter, this is a terrible idea on many levels, not to mention our Vols seasons could be a disaster awarding points to the other side with all the penalties they get called on them.

My kids are 15 and 12 and have a somewhat different experience. Parents behave very well towards the umps. It's the coaches sometimes cross the line.

Your league needs to step up and send a message that ump abuse will not be tolerated. Every league has a code of conduct about this. Have it read over the loudspeaker every half inning if that's what it takes.

I ran a tournament last year and booted a mom for heckling the umps.. Your league just needs to muscle up and protect the umps.

Yup. If you pay them enough to deal with that crap it’s one thing. In these little league games they’re making peanuts and pretty much doing it because they enjoy it. Dealt with a lot of parents who do their best to ruin it for everybody.

Years ago I was a referee for a flag football league. After 2-3 games I gave it up. I literally could have thrown a flag on every play. It gets frustrating enough you have to turn a blind eye sometimes and only flag the obvious or the game would drag on forever. Definitely not an easy job. You cannot win, someone is going to get ticked off every time you throw a flag. Never again….

I don't mind if they are called again both sides like opposing pitcher strike zones, there just seems so much disparity.

Um no. How about coaches coach their team to be disciplined. Some penalties happen just in a blink of an eye because of reactions. The leagues do need to hold the refs accountable after each game with reviews and they get fined per call missed or incorrect. That will correct some of the disparities and missed calls. It seems to be more missed called than not the last couple of years.

Lol. Trust me, every league would love to have F/T salaried refs.

They have never been able to get there.

Most of the refs have normal full time jobs. Hell, most of them are lawyers and realtors.

They don't wanna be f/t refs so they can double dip. Not to mention the actual you know accountability that would come with being a f/t employee. Heavens no !

NFL has been trying to get there for 20 years. Remember that little ref strike about a decade ago? League caved after two weeks I think.
