I took a step back after last nights roller coaster. Looking at where this team was ranked pre-season, I think we got a little too excited. Barnes has a history of getting his teams up to play early season, out of conference, big games. They did well, and with the lack of dominant teams, it wasn’t that hard to move up. Now, our overall record isn’t that much different than Mizzou or UF. Those big wins are losing their luster.
Last night, Missou got hot shooting. They made an inordinate amount of contested shots. That’s two games in a row where teams flung anything and it went in. Two buzzer beater losses take me back to Buzz ball. Very similar feel.
Once again we have suspect officiating. Yes, we won the FT battle, but that doesn’t tell the story. Another game where Vescovi is thrown to the floor and nothing called. Another blatant charge called a block.
Vescovi missing free throws to seal a game is another bad sign, and shows his lack in clutch situations. Really frustrating as with his experience he should be helping more. This was a guy teams were specifically scheming against. He just seems like another body at this point.
Phillips will never make it in the SEC with his style of play. He’s a finesse player. Honestly, if I were him, I’d transfer. I don’t know what it is about the SEC but they should have those guys in pads and helmets. He’s too frail to have any long term offensive success.
Missouri looked like it had a bunch of middle linebackers playing out there. That’s why Awaka has transitioned so well. He’s one of the few that has the build.
I still don’t think this is a loss we can dwell on. Missou hit shots despite tight defense. It was good to see key wake up. He was the primary reason for the comeback.
The biggest takeaway is this was a first year coach versus one of the most experienced in the country. You wouldn’t have known that by watching the game. In fact, that’s two games in a row where a first year coach has bested Barnes.
