Ok, well browsing on Wikipedia(I do that a lot), I read the Tennessee men's basketball article on there, and I notice something. Under the "pre-tournament champions" bar, I see 1916. Odd, I've never heard of a Tennessee team, pre or post tourney winning the whole thing.

Anyone know anything about this? It's probably nothing but some punk on Wikipedia editing it, but I thought I'd ask, just in case?

Oh, as a side note, I saw that Tennessee went 12-0 in b-ball in 1916. So, it looks like Tennessee has somewhat of a legit claim to it. Of course, nothing is really a legitimate national title back in those days, so w/e.

1) Tennessee doesn't claim it

2) it's not even a Helms trophy. About as illegitimate as you can get.

KY won one in the 1930s when they went 25-0 and were #1 in the AP poll, and they've never claimed it.

Yea, I saw the Helms list on there, which raised my suspicions a little bit. I think Wisconsin was the winner in 1916. But, doesn't LSU claim a national championship from 1935, and they're not on the Helms list.

Just wanted to check. Wiki usually has a lot of funny edits, and editors. I'm still po'd over the Rod Wilks article being deleted.

They won one in 1933, but were 21-3, and there was no AP poll until the late 1940's for college basketball.

Speaking of which, I think Kansas should take down their banners for their 'titles' won in the 1920s. In fact, any school hanging NC banners prior to 1939 is just wrong.

Like our 1967 title in football.

I had an argument with an Ohio State fan over that. Basically, I said, "If Alabama can claim 22 national titles in football, then Tennessee should be able to claim 6, instead of 3 or 4."

Didn't that 1967 team get rings for that Litkenhous national title?

So Carolina should take down the 1924 NC banner?

Ehh, even when the tournaments started, the NIT had more prestige than the NCAA for the 1st 10 years of it. Which is sort of a problem, considering the best teams didn't even play in the NCAA's.

1) Yes, they should.

2) when the NCAA tournament first started teams could play in both of them - and teams often chose to do so.
