I just got a renewal notice, and my annual plan for one radio has gone up to $260. With Spotify Premium, I'm thinking this is a waste of money. The only time I'm really stuck having to use it is if I'm out of cell service and don't have playlists downloaded that I'm interested in.

With unlimited cell plans, free radio like iHeart, and downloadable content with Spotify and iTunes, is satellite radio pricing itself out of business? Also, has anyone had success calling and getting significant savings by threatening to cancel?

Should be able to call in and get a year for 1 radio with internet for ~$130+tax or better when trying to quit. They also usually run a BF deal. Could let it run out and renew then.

Once it runs out, a month or two later they will start sending you deals to rejoin.

EDIT: Forget they have decent chat reps. I've done the quit/discount dance by chat the last few years. So that could be an option.

I pay $8.99/month. Every year upon renewal, I call to cancel and they keep my same rate. Been doing this for years. I don’t listen to local radio and don’t even know the stations

Thanks, I'll try the chat option over lunch tomorrow. I'll do $10/m. $20+ is stupid with other options.

I also run the APP off of Car Play in my Jeep. You really only need one subscription

AmEx Platinum has a benefit that covers up to $20 of your monthly SiriusXm cost. If you negotiate it down like mentioned above it’s zero dollars out of pocket.

I do it monthly and have had the service for over 2 years and only pay $6.99 a month

Yeah. They cave pretty easy when you threaten to cancel. Ford has/is stopping offering SiriusXM on their new vehicles, from what I was told. Might still be an option, if you specifically want it.

Honest question - why would you want SiriusXM over Apple Music or Spotify? Either of those cost about the same if not less and you can choose whatever you want to listen to, including podcasts. If you want radio, TuneIn is free and gets you most radio stations in the world.

I guess the only disadvantage is you probably need an unlimited data plan.

I got a free subscription to Sirius/XM back in the spring. I think it was for 3 months, no strings attached. I don’t if they’re still doing that, but it’s worth checking out.

Does Spotify or Apple Music have live sports? That’s the value of SiriusXM for me. Never miss a NASCAR, F1, Titans game, etc if I’m out driving or running using the app.

I pay $130 a year for the platinum plan. When it comes time to renew, I call the cancellation line. It automatically offers the same rate again without even talking to human. $11 a month feels like good value for what I use it for.

I don’t keep up with NASCAR, but radio broadcasts of Titans games are free (where I am at least) on their website

Only real reason is if you spend a lot of time in the car and want to listen to sports, news, comedy or Howard Stern and want it in one convenient place. It’s been passed by as far as music goes and it’s probably been passed by for news and sports except for the convenience.

True. We got a minivan that’s equipped with SiriusXM and I swear the car is programmed to turn on ads for it as soon as the van starts. Just curious if there’s some unknown great thing about it we’re missing.

Like I said, for music I don’t see the value. It’s more a matter of if you like listening to news channels or have particular talk shows that you like. If I didn’t travel a lot for business, I’m not sure that I would see value in it unless you’re just addicted to Stern or something.

For me, it’s kind of like TV - I just enjoy live events. I listen to sports games a lot when I’m in the car. I also like being surprised about what songs are coming on next, just like normal radio stations. I canceled for a little while and could not stand all of the commercials of local stations, so I switched back.

Can't you download your playlist and podcasts if you have Spotify Premium? That way it doesn't take data.
