2 of our 3 most gifted players don't want to look for their shot. Tyler and Scotty simply aren't aggressive enough; with respect to Tyler, this is a major problem. If he is going to play the point-forward, he needs to look to lead this team on the offensive end. Only Chism is willing to take the bull by the horns. He had a horrible day shooting, for which I don't have any complaints. It happens -- all of his shots were good shots. I'm more disappointed in Tyler refusing to shoot at all. Those are 2 of our problems (Scotty waits too late to get involved and Tyler hardly gets involved at all).
The 3, 4, 5 and 6 problem areas are 4 of our absolutely worst offensive shooters playing ball-hog basketball. Bobby Maze started this game playing great defense and totally neutralized his defensive play by taking horrible shots and acting like the name of the game is making sure he "gets his". Goins is no better, nor is Prince, nor is Woolridge. Memo to Woolridge -- no matter how you looked prior to your freshman season hitting threes, you cannot shoot the three point shot. Please quit wasting offensive possessions by trying.
If we could take Tyler's unwillingness to shoot and put it in Maze, Goins, and Prince and take their me-shoot attitude and put it in Tyler and Hopson, we'd be a much better team.
Pearl has allowed this to happen without any accountability and when your team has a bad shooting game, the result is the embarassment that we witnessed today. I'd like to see Pearl get a little Jim Calhoun in him and yank some players for their dumb shot selection. Boy do I miss CJ Watson.
Pearl has got to do something about Tyler's lack of a killer instinct. Perhaps he needs to bring him off the bench for a game or two. I'm not saying cut his minutes, but if he is going to offer nothing on the offensive end and we continue to have rebounding problems, perhaps he needs the motivation of seeing Wayne start at the 4 and Brian at the 5. The frustrating thing is that everyone wants him to shoot and he keeps costing himself future money by refusing to make plays. If Goins and Woolridge are going to keep jacking threes, why can't Tyler attempt a wide-open one? If he won't lead, let Chism lead.
We have a serious leadership problem right now because Bobby Maze and Tyler Smith are nowhere near the leaders they should be considering the positions they occupy and for opposite reasons. Maze wants to do it all, but doesn't have the ability and Tyler has the ability, but refuses to do it.
I can't criticize a team for missing open shots because sometimes you just have bad shooting games on the road, but I cannot stand ball-hog basketball, a lack of hammering the boards, and missed free throws. If Goins and Tatum can't hit FTs, then quit driving to the basket.
I'm afraid that as long as we have a couple of PGs who think the name of the game is for them to get theirs and a senior leader who doesn't lead on the court, we aren't going to come close to utilizing the talents of our other players. This problems can be corrected, but in the last few years Pearl has shown that whatever he is doing to try to correct them (assuming he is doing something) doesn't work. It almost makes one long for Ramar Smith at PG and that is scary.
