Braves announcer Skip Caray dies | ajc.com

I knew he had health problems, but this was a little shocking to me. I don't know if he was the best announcer, but he probably is one of the most familiar voices I can think of since I've heard him 100+ times a year for the past 25 years.

John Miller on ESPN just made a really good point . . . There was probably a time in the 80s where Skip Caray was one of the most well known broadcasters in America due to TBS going nationwide.

Skip Caray single-handedly made Braves games entertaining. The man was a joy to listen to, even this season when you could tell he was having some issues. He will be sorely missed and condolences go out to his entire family.

I did enjoy Skip Carey. I hated the Braves and still do, but he made it manageable to watch. Sorry to hear of his passing.

However, with Vin Scully still in the booth, you can not even begin to consider Skip the greatest or the most recognized.

Holy freaking crap.

I knew he had had some serious health problems, which is why I've been listening to more radio games than TV games this year; I didn't expect him to be back next year. But this is shocking. I've been listening to Skip Caray do Braves games for 2/3 of my life. I can't believe that, just like that, I won't ever hear another one. Just damn.

they certainly are quite the broadcasting family. i was never a Braves fan, but i could listen to his calls.

for me, his dad is much more memorable than Skip was.

I don't think that's what anybody said. Thanks for stopping by to remind us how much you hate the Braves, though.

I was just responding to GA's assertion of "i don't know if he's the greatest, but he's one of the most familiar".

Again, I really enjoyed his broadcasts. He was good. I'd take him everyday over most the crews ESPN puts out. Didn't mean for you to take it so personal.

Sorry. It does seem personal to me; I've probably heard Caray broadcast at least pieces of 2000 games in my life. It's astonishing to me to think that he's just......gone.

It never failed, every time he pulled one of those out of the hat, I couldn't stop laughing. The guy was awesome and it really is numbing to think he's gone. As much as I've listened to the guy and how closely he resembled family during the long summer days, you'll have to excuse some of us Braves' fans if we do take it personal because, in some cases, it seems personal.

Wow, I used to watch the Braves on tv all the time in the eighties and nineties. It's shocking to hear Skip passed away, I didn't know he had been sick. Rest in peace voice of the Braves.

My sentiments exactly. This is a guy whose voice I heard doing either radio or TV for the Braves and Hawks probably 100 times a year for almost 30 years. He's just the guy whose voice you are supposed to hear when the Braves are playing.

Kind of like when you wanted to watch the Braves, you turned to TBS. Now they are both gone.

His voice reminded me of slow summer nights in my childhood. None of that constant preaching between every pitch either during his broadcasts, unlike a lot of games on TV now. He'll be missed.

Just saw some video of him just now on the local news. He looked much slimmer than what I remember of him..

First TBS leaves the Braves, then John Smoltz gets hurt, Chipper aint getting any younger, and now Skip Caray is gone.....the Braves just are not the same.

RIP Skip.

Man, this is sad. Back in the day when almost evey Braves game was on TBS 91-2000 or so, like Vert, I bet I heard over 1,000 baseball games he did.

Sad news, fellaz. Sad news.

This sucks so much. One if the first things that comes to mind when thinking about the Braves is Skip. I knew he had health problems, but this is still stunning to me.

The guy was a riot. R.I.P.

I left my home in South GA at the tender age of 18 vowing never to return to live in the heat of the low country. For the 18 years following, Skip's voice was the equivalent of comfort food for me. Everytime I heard it I felt like I was right at home. This is a sad loss.
