Is anyone else wondering why we won't throw any quick 5 yard inside slants to North or Croom? I would think this would be a "go to" play to pick up an easy 5-6 yards with their speed and size.
I also think in order for us to keep some drives going against AL, Worley either needs to take a couple of the read-options himself, or do a couple of quick pitches. It is not good that on each read-option, the RB is basically starting and stopping cold in order to get the ball and cutting back and up the other direction. It is harder to be explosive through the line when you are going from a complete stop instead of getting momentum and hitting the line hard at 80% full speed. Lane has been a beast this season with his quick twitch shuffle and slide, all the while dragging people with him for about 5 yards, but Neal actually needs to get some speed going before he hits the line. Just thinking out loud and hoping.....

I think with the way Worley throws a lot of those would get deflected at the line if we did that a lot.

Worley keeping himself is something I hear a lot of people saying needs to happen. Alabama is big, fast, and hits hard. Less likely Worley will want it.

just my thoughts

Agree. His wind up is a liability on some routes.

The stop and start is designed. It's called a counter, and it throws the defense off for a second. It does not happen every play. It worked pretty well against South Carolina, so we did it quite a bit, though.

I don't think the coaches feel comfortable with Whorley throwing over the middle of the field. Notice how most of his passes are WR screens or routes along the sideline. I'm comfortable that there's a logical reason why.

For the love of all things orange, it's Worley, not Whorley. He's running the offense not selling his body on the streets.

OP, 'Bama has very good team speed and take good angles. To counter, run quick developing plays (avoiding reverses and sweeps), short passes like all-curls, 5-7 yd quick hitches, WR screens, seam routes, flares and quick outs. Run hard between the tackles avoid bouncing it outside or going wide. Worley tuck it if there.

I feel like Worley/butch has decided who will keep the ball before the snap even happens by the way a defense lines up. Maybe I'm wrong but it just seems that way. If you can read a defense well enough to not throw an interception in 2 sec games you should be able to see a DE crash and keep the ball. That would be one of the easier reads a qb can make IMO.

Keep in mind, two true freshmen behind Worley. Might be by design/need that Worley don't keep the ball.

Our offense is zone read, not read option. Last year at cincy with munchie they ran more, when they took him out for a passing qb they ran alot less. At this point we are not read option.

The slant is not an easy pass to complete. You are throwing at a running target that is in close proximity to a CB and a LB . Dont think Worley is there yet

The read option does not typically work well against a 3-4 team ..even if you have the athletes to do it . I am afraid all you could accomplish with a QB keeper from the read option against Bama is to dash our bowl hopes by knocking our QB out.

The read option is predicated on the split second decision that the DE makes..does he go inside or out?
The 3-4 does not feature a DE. So you have a mobile outside LB that can delay his rush and force the QB to make a read ...with nothing to go on. Also the weak side E gap has an outside backer over it ..this area is typically abandoned in the 4-3 and is where the read option makes its money .

It is also not advisable to try all the sweeps and outside runs against the 3-4. Those outside backers are further outside and close much quicker.

The best approach from a schematic POV is to use your big O-line and run right at them . We are now back to football basics ...win the line of scrimmage . I think this is our best match up on the field and hope we base our attack along these lines.

I agree with the idea of the slants, but if we are thinking about this; then surely the coaching staff has thought of it too. They must have a reason for not running the slants to Croom and North. If they thought it would work then I think we would have seen more of it. Just thinking aloud also.
