So I have decided to turn my dumb home into a smart home. Does anyone have a nest thermostat? I just purchased one. Will it really pay for itself in2 years? And if so upside/downside?

Whoa... is that what they are using as a selling point? Interesting.

I put in a nest 3 months ago and last month was the lowest bill I have had in my current house. Once you set it up, you also set up the Eco mode, which is low and high temps it will allow. When it doesn't sense that anyone is home it will not run unless it gets outside the Eco mode. Yes it saves you money quickly.

Of course not, it's just a thermostat.

A thermostat that automatically adjusts your heat/AC system to save you money? Of course it could pay back the couple hundred bucks over 2 years

I have the Honeywell RTH9580 and have been happy with it. You can schedule as you please and also connect remotely. I also like being able to turn the heat up without getting out of bed.:)

I'm just getting started here as well. I have a smart locks on the doors, a few smart plugs around the house and some Sonos speakers. So far, everything can also be controlled by my Echo. It's pretty cool to tell Alexa to turn the tree on and it "magically" happens.

Great thanks for the reply’s guys. So how do you like the locks? I have several of the Phillips hue bulbs but was told to stay away from smart TVs. And to use a chromecast

The locks are great. You never have to wonder if you remembered to lock the door. There is an auto-lock setting, but you can always check from your alarm pad (in some cases) or your phone.

I have a Ring doorbell too and was able to receive a package last week because I unlocked the front door and the fedex guy put it inside. Door closed, relocked and alarm reset, all from my phone. The Ring doorbell is pretty cool. Knowing who's at your door (and being able to speak with them) when you're away is more helpful than you might think.
