maybe they should put a 10 lap shootout at the end of every race

Congrats to Tony. He's really enjoying himself this year and to think that he doesn't normally heat up until around July or August.

I was glad Stewart won but in those first two segments they just basically rode around trying to figure their cars out and stay out of trouble. The All Star Race should be tweaked again IMO to make things more exciting for the entire duration of the race. Here's what I would do:

Segment 1 would be 20 laps - caution laps do not count during the last 5 laps.

Segment 2 would be 20 laps as well with the same format as Segment 1. However, the starting lineup of Segment 2 would be determined by the invert wheel. It would have numbers 0-12 on it and whatever it lands on that's how many gets inverted. It could be 0 or it could be 12 so you'd likely not have any sandbagging.

Then a final 10 lap dash with caution laps not counting.

Any driver winning all 3 segments gets a $1,000,000 bonus. A driver winning 2 of 3 segments gets a $250,000 bonus.

That should get them to race harder during the first and second segments both. Plus the invert possibility returns for the "what if" factor.

Honestly last night it became readily apparent to me that the All Star Race needed to be much shorter. You run two 20 lap sprints and then the 10 lap dash and I'm sure that would provide plenty of excitement for the fans.

If NASCAR felt like they needed more racing for the All Star Event then they could run a 40 lap Showdown where 1 guy transfers to the All Star Race.

Then they could run a 20 lap race where a second guy transfers.

Then, take the top 6 from the fan voting and let those 6 RACE to see which fan favorite gets into the All Star Race in a 5 lap dash. That way its not gift wrapped for someone to make the race - they'd at least have to beat a few other guys in a quick dash to get in. You could line them up in order of fan vote to make the fan vote count more though with the highest vote getter starting on pole.

Of course this is all just my opinion. The last 10 lap segment last night was very exciting. Especially when Newman was pushing Shrub down the backstretch and when they went 3 wide out of 4. If they could have held on it would likely have been that same way for another lap or two but with Kenseth, Kurt, and Tony all right in it then too.

I am a Smoke fan and I enjoyed the race before I knew he had a shot for the win. The 2 20 lap races are nessecary to give the drivers in the back a shot at improving their track position for the final 10 lap shootout. They could do the first 50 lap segment a little diffrent. Did they all have to pit on lap 26? It seems like that could change if so. I would rather them be able to pit whenever they wanted to after lap 25 as long as it was a 4 tire green flag stop.
