What do we need to work on? What didn't impress you today?

I am not quite back down to earth, but I must say this was an amazing effort on the part of the entire team. Ainge was sharp, Meachem looked like a Heisman contender, the running game showed flashes (behind a line that was supposed to be the weak link and did a spectacular job). the defense, well what can i say about the defense, they rocked it plain and simple. Colquitt was booming em, and Wilhoit was kicking the crap out of the ball on our (many) kickoffs.

So the secondary could catch some of those easy picks, the backs could be a bit more explosive, and what? the second-teamers could be better?

Great game.

The only thing I'm worried about right now is not letting this win go to their head and overlook Air Force toward the Florida game.

Just one game, but hard to find anything to not be pleased with.

Wade got beat a couple times but recovered very nicely to knock the ball out of the receiver's hands. No complaints if he can keep making plays that way.

i figured we'd be good. i didn't know we would play this good. ainge was the biggest surprise. foster didn't have as good of a game as i thought he would. but he'll be aight

Some of those sideline routes will not work in the SEC. The corners are too fast. I was puckered up a couple of time when ainge through the ball in there a little slow.

Agree... even his INT was a little behind the WR.

Seemed like the crowd groaned a bit on that incomplete pass down the sideline on the first drive where the starters were put back in during the 3rd quarter.

Not perfect, but definitely an improvement.

Yeah, if there's anything Ainge needs to work out, it should be being a little more decisive (not like he was bad or anything, but just saying). Even those 2 TD's to Meach...if they were 0.000001 of a second late, they would have been picked because the corner was breaking on them fast.

But if anything, decisiveness will come with confidence, and I don't see how he can have a lack of confidence after tonight.

yeah, as impressive as Ainge was, eventually one or two of those passes are going to go the other way. don't think the sec schools won't be watching those short out patterns and trying to get a jump. they're still getting more of the timing down in actual games so that will help our cause as well.

people are trying to discredit us a bit by saying "the sec defenses won't let them get that open", well Cal has a heck of a defense and there is no denying that. we exploited it like mad and give credit where credit is due. not every defense or secondary we play will be bama or lsu so who cares about that. florida's secondary, for example, isn't nearly as good as cal's.

the o-line was overly impressive in pass protection, but they weren't creating alot of holes for the runningbacks. there were creases and some nice plays were made, but the consistency wasn't there. the rb's made alot happen, which was nice.

the offense was so fluent and smooth, it's hard to pinpoint too much else that wasn't really positive.

defensively, we didn't miss many tackles. there were a few gaps late in the game that led to big gains in the air, but a bit of that might be the lax defense just to get the game over. wade was playing off a bit, but like someone else said, if he's recovering and making plays on the ball then it's acceptable. our speed is there and i think there were a few nice surprises no the field like ryan karl and antwan stewart showing up.

we didn't get to see much from the special teams other than colquitt booming it and wilhoit putting the kickoffs in the endzone. we already knew those things though. we still dont know how wilhoit will be, although i'm sure he'll be fine. we didn't get to see much from the punt/kick returns either due to the fair catches being called.

we played a smart game too. the interception was just bad luck despite it being thrown behind him a bit. why yancey was in the game before coker made no sense, but lamarcus got his carries late and that fumble by yancey wasn't good at all. hold on to the ball if you want to play. we had a few penalties, but nothing that worried me. i don't think we even had a false start or a delay of game.

the game really was as complete as it probably could have been. haha

I've already stated my case. The running backs just need more explosiveness. Acceleration would help.

If we all know out routes don't work in the SEC, then I can guarantee you our coaching staff knows this as well. Worry not, the playcalling will change by the time the Gators get to K-Town. Tonight would have been a success if Ainge simply got any sort of timing back down with the receivers. They did that in spades.

Also, Ainge made those throws because... He can. He won't take as many risks (hopefully) by the time conference play starts, but he was recruited for a reason... Namely because he throws as fast as anybody I've ever seen throw a football. It works in this little situation I like to call the clutch. If SEC d-backs clamp down on the plays like you guys say they do, we will need a QB capable of beating the coverage and forcing a ball in there. Ainge is just such a QB.

I have faith the proper adjustments will be made to the passing game. Once again, just pollish up the rush.

One of the biggest things I noticed was that he only floated one ball over the receivers head and that was late in the game. He looked solid tonight.

I agree that the offensive line wasnt as good on run blocking as they were on pass blocking. That could be due to Cal's defensive tackles.

As I stated in another thread, I'm not totally sold on Ainge. He was efficient, but he made a couple bad throws and 2 of his touchdown passes were ALL Meachem. As long as Ainge knows when not to do too much, we should be fine.

I'm pleased with Austin Rogers. I just want him to catch the ball. Dont really care about returns. We didnt get to see a lot of kick off returns. Morley and Taylor can be explosive.
