My high school went thru this in the 1970’s.
We kept the name Rebels but did away with Colonel Reb and confederate flags.
We changed to a 1776 Patriot looking mascot.
It didn’t please anyone on either side.
But both sides got something.
The whole Black Bear and Land Shark thing has been bungled badly.

But nah. They didn't want it to be a joke. So they went and made a mascot that was half shark, half stoner, half serial killer.

It's named after the guy who started the landshark, Tony Fein. Dude was in the Army and passed away a little while ago so it seems like a pretty good tribute to me (even though that mascot is horrifying)

The Seminole tribe threatened to sue the NCAA to prevent them from forcing a name change. They consider it an honor that FSU chose them as their mascot.
