...as fate would have it....and I'm hearing all of the "A&M to the SEC" talk around here. Seeing how this is my first time here, a few observations:

1. TAMU's stadium has the look and feel of an SEC venue.
2. The strip near campus seems like it would have a great gameday feel. Plenty of bars and clubs, too.
3. College Station is still halfway across the country for a couple SEC schools. Would be hard to sell TAMU/USCjr, or TAMU/Vanderbilt, IMO, with distance having much to do with it.
4. The fans around here seem just as crazy as die hard SEC fans.
5. They HATE everything UTjr.
6. Freebirds Burrito Shop is amazing.
7. I dislike the water tower, but that's just me.
8. It's hot. Juuust 104-degrees.
9. I also heard the following entertaining stories that illustrate point #4:

I was told that there is a lot of influence (read between the lines...."money") here in College Station. So much that recently Hooters wanted to open a restaurant in College Station; but, the powers that be told Hooters that they could not open the restaurant because Hooters' colors are the well-known dark orange and white....the same colors as The Longhorns. They made a demand saying they could not build the Hooters unless they painted the signage and changed the uniforms to A&M Maroon and White. Long story short, there is no Hooters in College Station.

Similar stories with Wataburger and Home Depot (both of which are orange and white typically). Wataburger agreed to paint part of their orange roof with and maroon stripe down it w/ A&M in white on it; and Home Depot has to fly an A&M flag ABOVE the highest point of orange on their building.

Crazies abound here when it comes to Aggie football. Maybe they do belong in the SEC afterall...

I enjoyed it. Much better than Austin (or Dallas or Houston et al...). Seems like a different place that the other parts of Texas I've been to.

Oh wow, those stories brought back some great memories of my days in College Station.

I'll never forget the Texaco Gas Station that was across from Zachary...the huge engineering building. That Texaco was solid maroon...not red with green trim. Was told it was the only maroon Texaco station in the United States.

Sorry you had to experience the 104 degree temperatures. Summers are awful in C.S.

McDonalds is orange on Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville and orange and blue on 13th Street in Gainesville. I wonder if they were asked to ditch their red, or if they did it on their own.

I camped there twice when I was in high school. I loved running drills on Kyle Field. It was awesome. The campus is really nice. Gotta catch a Bombers game. BTW do they still have the astro turf practice field?

Pretty cool, but there's no way the fans coordinated that. I'm guessing by "we" you mean the administration placed red, white and blue t-shirts in the appropriate seats?

That indeed was coordinated by two Aggie undergraduate students. It truly was a grass roots campaign and did not involve the university. Immediately after 9/11, A&M postponed their Saturday game, which gave the necessary time to implement the plan. I wish I could find the original thread on TexAgs.com regarding this event...from the initial idea to the planning and execution. Shirts were $5 each, and the money was donated to the families of the firemen and policemen killed at the WTC in NYC. I wish I still had my red shirt...I gave it to my daughter's best friend, who was accepted into A&M a couple of years ago.
