1) As many on here are wondering, I scratch my head and wonder if Worley playing the whole game gets us a win. I understand why Butch made the decision to play Peterman. Clearly they hoped he'd come out and spark that offense. Coaches are going to have to make some gambles on personnel/playcalling from time to time. I'm not sure our fans are ready for that...

2) In 30 years, in an off-the-record setting, I'd love to ask Butch if shutting up the fans about the backup QB had substantial weight in the decision to start Peterman. You have to think this buys some more support for Worley.

3) I thought our defense played really well all around. For how little the offense was on the field, those guys played hard for the entire game.

4) The Vols were in it until the end and were definitely fighting it out for a win. I'm in no way suggesting the game is a moral victory - but it was good to see the team not crumble under pressure or give up.

5) I actually thought all aspects of the game has improved just about every week (except passing when Peterman was in).

6) M. North is really coming around, and Pig didn't look too bad either. It's heart breaking seeing our WRs drop so many passes in the Florida game. If our WRs are one year older, we're a much better team.

7) I am really interested to see what they do w/ QBs going forward. Worley played half decent against a strong Florida D. Peterman is clearly not the answer. I wonder if they drop Peterman to the scout team and promote freshmen to earn some practice reps....

I agree that the team didn't give up and there are some positives to take from the game. However, the meltown has just begun on VN. We'll be hearing about this from some posters until next season, if not longer.

Hopefully the timeout for Worley is a wake up call for him.

The receivers need to focus. Maybe a few hundred laps around the field would get them to. Josh Smith is horrible.

I wonder if we get Mo Couch back anytime this season?

It did appear to me that Pig and Croom started showing more confidence along with Worley.

We just need more talent and depth and experience in the new system.

2 more years before we compete in the SEC.

Nothing surprised me about yesterday's game. After 5 years of losing, I've got used to it.

i was just about to start this thread. i am glad that apparently every vol fan except for butch jones knew that peterman would come in and somehow be worse than worley. worley did look better though when he came in. we were expected to lose and we did. i dont know why people are surprised. before this season started 6 wins including one upset was going to be considered a great season. nothing has changed. i think we looked 100x better than we did against oregon and if we keep progressing with the talent we have (which is limited) that is all you can ask for. after seeing UGA and vandy yesterday and USC being USC at home, i still think we can win S alabama and 3 of 4 in november and possibly upset uga or usc. 6 to 7 wins would be a GREAT season considering what we had coming in and if we keep progressing i think we will do it. everyone just needs to calm down.

I don't like the offensive scheme.. As far as the game went, it went about like i expected it to..

I don't like it either

It may work against lower competition, but its not going to work against fast defenses. It's not fooling anyone

Worley playing the whole game gets us closer, but doesn't win us the game. Coaches have to put inexperienced players in a position to win games and our coaching staff did not.

Our running plays are predictable. I would think if we has a running QB that they would pull it down and run... But we don't

I like Butch and support him 100% but if the fans in any way made him decide to start Peterman, he should be fired immediately.

The scheme looks bad because the talent needed to run it isn't here. Good players win games. It doesn't matter how you have them line up. That's also why the play calling is so redundant. There isn't another option with a quarterback who can't throw and an o line that couldn't get push against a child.

Thank you for this thread. The defense has improved over last year and the offense is going to take time. I agree at some point the receivers are going to have to start making some plays. I thought Worley played better and made some nice throws other than the one ill advised interception but if you watch that one if he throws the post the receiver is wide open.

I think most need to understand this offense is built around the threat of the QB running the ball and at this point neither QB is a threat to run the ball. I also believe that this o-line is just to big and slow to play this style of offense.

You got to get more out of the QB in that scheme.. I have trouble comprehending why we're lining up out of the pistol. We'd do better with a extra blocker with the run plays we're running..

They played hard and never quit. That's all I can ask. Florida had more talent and won. Onto the next game. Lets get to a bowl game!!

i agree.worley & peterman don't look like they fit the scheme to well.don't know about ferguson & dobbs.you need a qb that can run when using the pistol offense.like you said.having that extra blocker may open up some holes for our backs.

If he wants to win now you think he'd adjust. "Delayed gratification" like the Oregon troll said.. That's the only reason i can come up with for continuing to pound head into wall..

Formerly known as VolvaninFL:
I was at the game with my 8 yr old son. Prior to yesterday he was 2-0 at Vol games hes been to. Ole Miss and NC State.
Observations:
QB Play: Peterman fumbled his first 2 possesions. Then threw a pick, bounced right off the linebacker into the safety. He should have been pulled after the second fumble. We had a better chance with Worley. Peterman line: 4-11, 5 yds, 4 TO. There was the ballgame.
Playcalling: Early in the game our O line was blowing them 2-3 yds off the ball. Why keep running outside to their strength? We were gashing them between the tackles. I was in section 45 upper deck and I could see it. These coaches are NOT going to coach to the strengths of this team. They just arent. Theyre committed to THEIR WAY.
Defense: The coaches had good play calls. Probably couldnt see on TV (depending on where the cameras were) but AJ was calling the plays and almost always right. He was pointing presnap where the ball was going. We were just too slow to get to the outside and couldnt get off blocks. ON a positive we stuffed everything up the middle. McCullers played lights out. We played a lot of people on the line. Gregory Clark (93) played a lot of snaps as did O'Brien. For those going who is Clark? Thats the point...no depth. Vereen saw playing time at end and caused at least 1 false start.
Youth: We played Josh Smith and Marquez North and Howard as our starting 3. Croom saw action. Fr, Fr, RsFr and Soph. Passing game not going to look good until these guys get more reps. Dallas must not be that good. Hardly in from what I could tell.
Their QB: We nearly sacked him 5-6 times and he escaped each time. On a roll out near the goal line we had 2 guys waiting for him and he juked them both and scored. Again Defensive scheme was good. We gotta make plays and tackle. We would have won this game with Driscol despite the horrid offense. Coaches had this game schemed well on defense.
Overall perception: Butch isnt going to change the offense so we better get used to burning the talent we have on O-line while watching this petrid ineffective misdirection, read-no-option junk. I think he is system oriented and is going to keep running it until we get it. Maybe it happens this year, if not hope it works in 2014. Defense: I cannot believe how much better this defense is than last year. They played well overall.

If Worley would have started the game I don't see him turning over the ball 4 times and putting the defense in a position of being spent by the 2nd half may have been difference in the ball game. Just an observation.

It was also his shat play in the previous 3 games that got him benched. Might have been the smart move , but Jones sees what most of us see. Worley doesn't give you many options. The sad part is we found out why he was starting the first 3 games. Worst QB situation at Tennessee in some time.

I agree completely with your analysis.

Bajakian has been attached to Jones' hip since Central Michigan so this offense isn't going anywhere.

Literally, or figuratively.

They are running a read option offense with players recruited for a spread offense with some NFL power running sprinkled in.

All these fake hand offs are doing is giving opposing defense extra time to react because they know Worley won't pull it down to run and they know if he does his "speed" can't possibly hurt them.

The sad part is this is not over there will be at least 1 more time where they will make a QB change and if they do I think you kiss anything at a 6-6 season goodbye. Realistically that's kind of what I thought going into this season.
