Trying to be optimistic here. I was a Pearl supporter, but I'm willing to put the past behind me and look foward to the future. But I need some help, besides the very rare chance of getting a big name coach, I can't see any silver lining. Our recruits already are jumping ship, and many of us pretend like we don't need them.

Anyway before I start ranting, can someone help me out here? What do we have to look foward to?

Not having an interim coach and recruiting restrictions for 2 years.

This may not reflect on the OP, but just a question I am curious about.

Most of the Pearl apologists start out by saying, "Now, I never gave a hoot about bball before Bruce". If this is the case, then why in the world are they so depressed about the bball team losing the coach. Wouldn't it be much easier to just stop watching basketball again?

The other shoe has finally dropped. This moves us forward towards getting the cloud that's been hanging over the entire athletic department for three years out of the way. This moves us towards Tennessee being normal again.

Tennessee basketball was going to be ugly for a couple of years regardless of what we did. Given the roster and the sanctions Pearl was facing, even if we'd kept him, we were looking at a few years in the wilderness regardless. But at least now it will be a normal kind of rebuilding project -- we will have a coach, and he will bring in players, and we will get better. Or else we will fire him and bring in another coach. We have ripped off the bandage and now the wound can stop festering.

Well stated. Hope your right.

Heres some good news. The incoming coach will not have to wait to long to get players that fit "his" system. I dont think any possible recruiting restrictions (# of schollys available) will hurt us that much.

No because you actually started enjoying it.

Football season.

We're really not going to be much worse off than what we were this year. We just set a record for margin of defeat between and 8 and 9 seed. Is that really better than not making the tournament? Would we have made the tourney next year anyway with Bruce?

Yes, but it wouldn't really have been with Bruce. Even if UT retained Pearl, he was going to be watching next season, and probably the one after, at his home while Brandy washed his feet with her hair.

Because Tennessee had become so irrelevant in football under Fulmer....Bruce Pearl made us semi-relevant in basket ball. He gave fans of the VOLS in general something to feel optomistic about and cheer about....even if they didn't like basketball as a sport in general.

Highly disagree. I think you may be surprised next year if you believe this. Either way its a win-win for me, if im wrong then that means we are winning but seriously with toby and scotty likely gone we have zero scorers.

I'm saying we weren't competing for championships this year. We weren't going to be with Bruce next year, either.

So we really aren't losing anything in the short-term. This was a Fulmer situation.

I think we'll have to look forward to not having to worry about whether our coach is telling the truth or not.

I get that, but don't you see the problem with allowing casual fans who didn't start caring about basketball until 2005 to have an impact on the decisions regarding said sport? Thankfully, no one listened to them in the end.

My opinion is we may get a coach from a smaller school that does well in the tourney.
Maybe a Butler, a VCU. etc. Then they will bring their current recruits to U.T. when they get hired here.
That may not add up to SEC talent but it is a start. The coach will have to get a 7 year contract, so he can show he can build a program that has a depleated roster and NCAA sanctions. Of course, we will have to pay him well.
If this hire is not good and he has a 7 year contract, then Hamilton will be gone. So, Hamilton needs to consult Grunfeld or King on this hire. Hamilton is not bright enough to make the hire himself.

I wanted Pearl to come back until I began to think clearly about it. First, he makes the dumbass move of hosting a junior at his bbq, pics and all and lying to the AA about it. Then, after a teary-eyed presser, committed the 'bump' violation without self-reporting. This, within two weeks of basically admitting he was a liar and a dumbass That 'bump' undid him, it was the only other nail the AA needed to string him, and the school, up if they so chose. That's bad enough. Making illegal contact w/ a junior was stupid, in both instances. Saying that he had no idea that it was a violation was laughable. If you and I and most of VN know it's a violation, how the hell could a Div 1 hoops coach NOT know? We knew he was a dumbass before, but when he said that he was basically admitting he was a liar AND a dumbass - again! I will miss his presence and infectious enthiasm, but I jumped the fence and am content with the fact that he will not return now.

What you can look forward to now is the prospect of landing a great coach that can rebuild the program bigger and better. I'm confident we will get a good one. Hammy simply cannot afford to make a poor hire. If it take a year or two to get the program rebuilt, so what? We'll be better off. GBO!

The good news is that the most famous cheating lying coach now resides in Columbus, Ohio.

May the famous sweater vest twist slowly in the wind for the next 12 months before he meets the same fate.
