Watched intently our soft zone coverage against Uconn. We were lining up sometimes 8 to 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. We as a unit are not effective in this type of coverage. The few times we did line up on the line of scrimmage we were much better in coverage. This soft zone stuff needs to go. I would rather get beat being aggressive than to just keep on making a tackle after an easy completion. Soft zone will get us beat in our next 2 games. What am I missing with this strategy by our coaches.

Well, yes they played a soft zone. However, we only blitzed a few times as well. I'm thinking that, even though it was UConn, you just don't show anything if you don't have to do so.

Plus you hope their QB is accurate and in the 2nd half you keep everything in front of you. He was in the first half but wasn't the same in the second half.

I still don’t trust our DBs whether they are in zone or man coverage. Overall the upperclassman are just not athletic enough against better competition.
I still rather they get beat in man than not at all. At least in man the QB doesn’t have a clear view to the WR that at least may make him look for another target

Well, you gotta do one or the other. Honestly they’re not out of position, they just can’t cover in space. It’s a combo of several situations. We have a talent problem in the secondary.

This. And teams play zone for a reason: it’s flexible between run and pass and gives help to players that may have a matchup issue. Teams may complete passes, but there are normally players around to tackle. Zones get smaller near the end zone, so zone becomes easier to play. It’s easier to disguise a blitz and play safe behind a blitz.

Getting five first downs in a row is hard. If a defense can avoid giving up more explosive plays than its offense gets, it will win most games.

You're missing that this game amounted to a scrimmage. They weren't going to put a lot on tape for future opponents to scout.

Part of the problem is anytime we give up a completion this entire board yells “soft zone” without even knowing if we are playing zone

There’s a lot of reasons for playing zone coverage. It’s better against the run. It’s better against all QB runs because everyone has their eyes on the QB. It also allows you to blitz safely.

Even the most casual fan can tell a zone coverage. They literally don’t man up. Poor coaching still plagues this team. Period.

Our best man coverage corner is out for the year. Playing press man with less than talented players will get you beat quickly for long gains. Of course no actual head football coach would do that.

UConn was not the team to pressure heavy nor get exotic with your coverages. That was a homecoming game that we ended up winning by fifty.

Not much to take out of that game except for the people crying for Nico to get some action can finally shut up, and hopefully as few injuries as possible were susutained.

I'm a little worried about Wesley Walker. His pff grades have plummeted the last 3 games. Is he banged up?

We need some 6'2" 200 pound guys back there who can run and hit, and make plays on the ball in the air. As in all-SEC level talent.

I’ll add another reason to run zone on top of helping with run defense, QB run, and limiting big plays.

Zone defenses typically have more interceptions because everyone has their eyes on the quarterback and QBs will often lead guys into zone defenders because they don’t see them

Jimmy's and Joe's can't do the x's and 0's in this defense. As much as I didn't like Hadden's trash talk last season, you gotta admit losing him put a strain on those left.

After seeing DBs constantly lose ball awareness, I don’t know how anybody could want us to have them turn their backs and play more man coverage.
