I watched most of last nights Div. 1 CIT high school championship game between southern California powerhouses Norco and Los Alamitos. Jenna Holcomb and Megan Geer both played for Los Alamitos, fyi. Coming into the game, Norco was 32-0 and ranked the no. 1 high school team in the country. Los Alamitos was ranked no. 3. Norco had beaten Los Alamitos 1-0 earlier in the season.
The shortstop for each of these teams has committed to UT--Mikalya Alee of Norco and Kaitln Parsons of Los Alamitos--so I wanted to see them play and see what top-level Californian HS softball was like. Long story short, Los Alamitos ruined Norco's bid for an undefeated season by winning the game 3-1. Their pitcher, who is going to Maryland, was the story of the game, as she throttled Norco until the 7th inning when Alee hit a home run for Norco's only run. There was some questionable umpiring in the game that help Los Al score two runs, but on the whole they were the better team.
Alee is an impressive player. Like Parsons, she is a junior and so has one more year of HS softball. She is a polished defensive shortstop and made a couple of real good plays, saving a run with one of them, and of course she hit the home run. She is a nice prospect. She hits 2nd in the lineup. (Norco's catcher and no. 3 hitter is ranked the no. 1 soph player in the country and is committed to Oklahoma--boo.) Parsons, the Los Al shortshop, also looked fine at SS but did not get many chances. She, too, hits 2nd in the lineup. She's athletic, more of a slapper than Alee, and fast--though I don't think she got a hit last night. They both, at a minimum, should be solid players for us in a couple of years.
