Game 1: Nebraska

CLEARWATER, Fla. –
Despite a strong 11-strikeout performance by junior pitcher Karlyn Pickens, the sixth-ranked Lady Vols fell to No. 19 Nebraska, 7-1, in Thursday's season opener at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Florida.

Tennessee (0-1) managed five hits off Nebraska pitcher Jordy Bahl and scored the game's opening run in the bottom of the fourth. With freshman Zoie Shuler pinch-running on second, senior Sophia Nugent hit a double to center field, scoring Shuler for her first career run as a Lady Vol.

Up 1-0 after four innings, the Lady Vols recorded two quick outs in the top of the fifth before a single, followed by an error, extended the frame. With runners on the corners, Tennessee suffered another error as an errant throw sailed into right field, allowing three unearned Nebraska runs to score.

A two-run home run extended the Huskers' lead before Pickens struck out the final batter of the fifth inning.

Pickens faced one batter in the sixth before being relieved by sophomore pitcher Sage Mardjetko, making her Tennessee debut. Pickens finished the game allowing five runs—all unearned—on five hits, with 11 strikeouts over five innings of work.

Mardjetko completed the outing, allowing two runs on one hit, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Nebraska's (1-0) Bahl tossed a complete game, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out seven.

Game 2: Bethune-Cookman

CLEARWATER, Fla. –
Freshman pitcher Erin Nuwer and sophomore pitcher Sage Mardjetko delivered dominant performances in their first starts as Lady Vols Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, leading Tennessee to a pair of run-rule victories over Bethune-Cookman and Iowa.

Nuwer, making her first career start, fired a five-inning no-hitter against Bethune-Cookman in a 10-0 win. The East Aurora, New York, native joined legendary pitcher Monica Abbott as the only Lady Vols to throw a no-hitter in their Tennessee debut. The right-hander struck out eight and allowed only one walk, coming in the third inning. Her no-hitter marked the 59th in Tennessee history.

Mardjetko, in her first start as a Lady Vol, was equally impressive in game two against Iowa. After giving up an early run in the second inning, she escaped a bases-loaded jam and went on to dominate the Hawkeyes lineup. A Lemont, Illinois, native, Mardjetko surrendered just two hits, walked one, and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts.

Game 3: Iowa
Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single. The Hawkeyes loaded the bases with one out in the frame, but Mardjetko struck out back-to-back batters to escape the jam.

In the third inning, McKenna Gibson tied the game with an RBI single to center, scoring Bella Faw. Tennessee added two runs in the fourth for a 3-1 lead before exploding for seven runs in the fifth inning. Sophia Nugent hit a two-run home run, followed by Kinsey Fiedler's two-run RBI single. Gibson capped the scoring with a three-run home run, her third hit of the game, securing the run-rule victory.

Game 4: Notre Dame

Tennessee jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior McKenna Gibson continued her strong start with a two-RBI single, followed by a two-run home run from Pannell deep to left.

Notre Dame responded with two runs in the third, aided by two errors that extended the inning. The Irish threatened to add more, but freshman pitcher Peyton Tanner entered in relief and shut them down.

UT answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, using small ball to extend its lead to six runs. After Morgan's RBI single added another run in the fourth, senior Sophia Nugent ended the game with a bases-loaded RBI single to left, securing the run-rule victory.

Freshman Erin Nuwer started in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing two runs—none earned—on one hit with two strikeouts. Tanner pitched 2.2 innings in relief, giving up just one hit and recording her first career strikeout in the fifth. She earned her first career win.

Game 5: Northwestern

After a combined three runs in the first inning—two for Tennessee and one for Northwestern—the Lady Vols took control with a four-run second inning. Redshirt freshman Ella Dodge sparked the onslaught in with her first career home run, a two-run shot to center.

Dodge added another two-run homer in the third, as Tennessee extended its lead with three more runs.

The Lady Vols tacked on three additional runs in the fifth, completing their fourth consecutive run-rule victory.

Karlyn Pickens tossed a five-inning complete game, limiting Northwestern to one run on three hits. She walked three batters and struck out seven, earning her first win of the year.

Game 6: Pittsburgh

CLEARWATER, Fla. –
The sixth-ranked Lady Vols capped their opening weekend with an 8-3 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

Tennessee played six games in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, finishing with a 5-1 record to kick off the 2025 campaign. Dominating both in the circle and at the plate, the Lady Vols outscored their opponents 51-14, hitting .364 as a team.

The Lady Vol pitching staff tossed three complete games, struck out 48 batters, and held opponents to a .128 batting average.

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Pannell was named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament Team after posting a 6-for-17 (.353) performance at the plate. She contributed four runs, one double, two home runs and nine RBIs.

On Sunday, Sophia Nugent set the tone with a leadoff home run to begin the second inning, marking her second long ball of the weekend. Pannell continued the offensive onslaught with a two-out grand slam, extending UT's lead to 5-0 after two innings.

Tennessee capitalized on a Pittsburgh error to add a sixth run in the third inning.

The Panthers responded with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, cutting the Lady Vols' lead in half heading into the late innings.

Kinsey Fiedler provided some insurance with a two-RBI single to center in the sixth, helping Tennessee seal the win.

Sophomore Sage Mardjetko got the start in the circle, throwing 5.1 innings to earn her second victory of the season. The Lemont, Illinois, native allowed one run on two hits, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Mardjetko was briefly lifted to start the fifth inning, as junior Charli Orsini came on in relief. Orsini faced four batters, retiring two, before Mardjetko reentered the game. Orsini allowed two unearned runs and walked two.

Karlyn Pickens closed out the game in the seventh, recording the final three outs of the weekend.

Game 7: McNeese State

Three multi-run home runs powered Tennessee to a 12-0 win in game one, which ended in six innings. Dodge hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Lady Vols a 4-0 lead.

A six-run sixth inning was sparked by a three-run shot from Pannell and a two-run blast from Laura Mealer.

Game 8: McNeese State

Tennessee hit three more home runs in game two, with Dodge and Pannell going deep again, while sophomore Gabby Leach hit her first career homer in the fifth inning.

Leading 3-2 in the fourth, Pannell hit a two-RBI double to extend the lead. Leach then added a solo shot in the fifth to pad the advantage.

Both Pannell and Dodge homered again in the sixth, with each hitting solo shots.

Sophomore Ryan Brown capped the scoring in the seventh, doubling down the left-field line to score Pannell and Katie Taylor.

Erin Nuwer started in the circle and pitched two innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout. She was relieved in the second but returned to finish the game in the seventh.

Sage Mardjetko threw five shutout innings of relief, giving up one hit, walking two, and striking out five. Mardjetko earned her third win of the season.

Game 9: Lamar

Leach delivered an outstanding performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs as Tennessee run-ruled Lamar in five innings. The sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas, contributed a pair of two-RBI singles in the first and fifth innings.

Leading 5-0 heading into the fifth, the Lady Vols exploded for eight runs in the frame. They did all the damage without hitting a home run, relying on a pair of doubles, two singles, five walks, and two hit-by-pitches to pile on the runs.

Freshman Peyton Tanner made her first career start in her home state, tossing four shutout innings. The Lake Jackson native allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out four to earn her second win of the season.

Junior Charli Orsini pitched one inning in relief, surrendering two hits and striking out one.

Game 10: Tulsa

Destiny Rodriguez, a native of Live Oak, Texas, knocked an RBI single in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-0. In the sixth, Tennessee sealed the run-rule victory with two runs on an error and a groundout.

Pickens threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and one walk. Her 15 strikeouts set a career high, surpassing her previous mark of 14 set on Feb. 24, 2024, against UCF. The junior earned her third win of the season.

The victory over Nicholls marked the Lady Vols' 10th consecutive win.

Sophomore Sage Mardjetko starred on Sunday, delivering a one-hit complete-game shutout. The right-hander recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the season. Mardjetko allowed just one walk and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

Game 12: #19 Oregon

In a classic pitcher's duel, both teams were hitless through the first three innings before Laura Mealer broke the deadlock with a single up the middle in the fourth. The Lady Vols mounted a threat in the fifth, with back-to-back singles from Kinsey Fiedler and Saviya Morgan followed by a walk to load the bases. However, they were unable to capitalize and left the bases loaded.

Oregon ended Pickens' no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth and threatened to break the scoreless tie as the runner advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. With nobody out and a runner on third, Pickens shut down the Ducks, inducing a shallow pop fly to center and back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning.

Under international tiebreaker rules in the eighth, Oregon's runner at second advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Tennessee intentionally loaded the bases to set up a force out at home, but the Ducks scored the game's only run on a passed ball.

Game 13: Oregon State

After the tough loss, the Lady Vols quickly regrouped, scoring two runs in the first inning against Oregon State. Sophia Nugent provided the big hit with a two-RBI single to left.

Nugent, a Seal Beach, California, native, went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs. Kinsey Fiedler also had two hits and drove in three runs, including an RBI groundout and an RBI single. Freshmen Saviya Morgan, Amayah Doyle, and Emma Clarke all added two hits.

In the fourth inning, Mealer hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot that brought Tennessee within one run of the run-rule threshold. The Lady Vols added to their lead in the sixth, with Fiedler's RBI single making it 9-0, followed by a RBI double from Nugent to push the lead to 10.

Game 14: Rutgers

Rutgers struck first with a run in the top of the first, but Tennessee responded with 10 unanswered runs, fueled by nine hits, including two triples and two home runs.

Morgan led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a single by Kinsey Fiedler. The two combined again in the third, as Fiedler singled home Morgan for Tennessee's second run.

The Lady Vols extended their lead in the third when Taylor Pannell crushed a two-run homer, her sixth of the season.

Tennessee put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth inning, followed by Clarke's walk-off two-run home run in the fifth to end the game via the run rule.

Sage Mardjetko earned the win – her fifth of the season – tossing five innings, allowing one run on two hits. She walked one and struck out six.

Game 15: #4 UCLA

Tennessee jumped out to an early lead against UCLA, using three RBI singles from Pannell, Amayah Doyle, and Destiny Rodriguez to score three runs in the first inning.

The Lady Vols were sharp defensively, with Laura Mealer making a diving grab on a lineout in the first inning. Tennessee also turned a double play in the second and kept UCLA's runners out of scoring position until the fifth.

Karlyn Pickens started in the circle, pitching four innings. In the fifth, the Bruins loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, prompting a pitching change with Mardjetko entering the circle. The Bruins broke through with an RBI ground out, followed by a three-run home run. The first three runs were charged to Pickens with the fourth run going against Mardjetko.

Pickens finished her outing with three runs allowed on four hits, one walk, and a strikeout. Mardjetko gave up one run on three hits and notched one strikeout. She took the loss and is now 5-1 on the season.
