Coach Caldwell has breathed such life and excitement into LV's basketball in barely 2 months on the job... now seems a good time to remember some of the "old good times" at random... Abby Conklin, played in the late 90's. The only LV I've heard described as "pushed Pat to the limit (and not in a good way)". In 96-97 someone had to break... Pat benched Abby as a starter for the Texas Tech game. Once in the game, Conklin went on to score a career high 26 points. Afterward she said "I was afraid Pat was gonna give up on me... I didn't want that." TN lost 10 games that season but won the National Championship... many consider that season to be Pat's greatest coaching job. Flash forward about 30 years... Abby Conklin started her own business from the ground up... A52 Signs and Graphics based out of San Francisco and had been very successful for over 26 years. Covid closed her down in 2020 as her business was deemed non-essential. Her response to the situation has been this... "Playing for Pat, it just prepared you for things like this. You can either freak out or deal with it. I'm just dealing with it." Pat had such an impact on people's lives. What a legacy.

Anybody Out There heard of Caitlin Clark ? (sarcasm intended)... Phenom like no other and deservedly so... She has changed EVERYTHING about women's basketball... no argument. Anybody heard of Michelle Marciniak ?... maybe a few... Michelle was the Caitlin Clark of the 1990's.
She was the top recruit in the country in 1991 and everyone wanted her, including Pat Summit. Pat recruited her out of high school (Allentown Central Catholic, Allentown PA)... Pat was pregnant and went into labor during a home recruiting visit with Michelle and her parents. Mickie DeMoss convinced Pat to cut the recruiting visit short (the Marciniak family later revealed they were terrified by Pat's condition), got her on a plane and headed home. (Side note: once on the plane, Pat sent a message to the pilot to NOT land the plane in any state other than Tennessee... her child would be born in Tennessee). Michelle went (to the surprise of many) to Notre Dame out of HS. Sports Illustrated in 1991 proclaimed her the "Pony-tailed Princess of the Hoop" (know any other pony-tailed princesses of the hoop ?). Pat must have made an impression... Michelle transferred from ND to TN in '93. Pat was ecstatic. Michelle was Pat's point guard through '96... winning a National
Championship along the way. TN fans embraced her as "Spinderella" due to her slashing, cutting, spinning style of play. And that pony-tail...
