This fanbase has been circling the drain for years now just as much as the football team. UT is not viewed as a great job right now by the top coaches and it's mainly because of the work that needs to be done in order for this program to consistently compete at the top of the SEC. Great facilities but a mediocre recruiting base where you have to beat top tier SEC schools in their backyard for recruits in order to compete at the level we desire. It isn't easy. This program made its living in the 90s when Georgia was down, SC was terrible, and we could basically take our pick from NC/VA. You can't do that anymore. Some of you need to understand this.
Throw in the recent NCAA crap and canning a coach after three years and you have the makings of yet another mess. Believe it or not, many coaches likely believe that Dooley got a raw deal due to the mess left by Kiffin and only getting three years before being canned.
This doesn't even include the explosion of money into a number of programs that didn't previously have it. You think ten years ago that Louisville or Oklahoma State keeps their coach if UT wants him? No, they don't. But they now have the money to pay these coaches due to that explosion in revenue.
Outside coaches likely viewed UT as a total rebuilding job by assuming Bray, Patterson, and Hunter were leaving while the defense (with potential) was absolutely terrible last year.
With that said, I believe Jones is a better coach than Strong. If he can assemble a good staff, we might have something.
