We've got a week until our next game (a huge one), and a little while until NFL comes on, so thought I would pass the time with some more numbers :)

THE GOOD

Offensive Efficiency..119.8 #1 SEC #19 NCAA:
Who would have ever thought Tennessee and efficient offense would be used in the same sentence? It seems to be a common misconception with this squad though that they struggle offensively, but with a points per possession at 1.2 the fact is Tennessee has one of the most efficient offenses in the country.

Offensive Rebounds per game...16.3 #1 SEC #5 NCAA:
This one doesnt come as much of a surprise, at least not in comparison to the previoius stat. Jarnell Stokes is 18th nationally and 2nd in the SEC, and Jeronne Maymon is 47th nationally and 7th in the SEC.

Turnovers per game...9.3 #1 SEC #7 NCAA:
This probably is a pretty big part of why our offensive efficiency is so good, we are taking care of the ball at an amazing level. Especially when you consider the fact that we start a guy who many said wasnt a true PG, and his backup is a freshman that was labeled as a combo guard. We average 9.3 turnovers per game, and have had 2 games this year with 5 turnovers, thats amazing.

THE BAD

Defensive Rebounding...23.1 #13 SEC #240 NCAA:
There is simply no excuse for this, smells of lack of focus and laziness honestly. No reason in my opinion that you should be such a good offensive rebounding team, but horrible defensive rebounding team. Put forth the same effort rebounding on both ends and we would be one of the best rebounding teams in the country.

Free throw percentage...68.1 #7 SEC #214 NCAA:
This isnt a horrible number, but when you look at how many points we are leaving on the floor (especially in losses) that number is alarming. In wins we average over 70% from the line, thats where that number needs to get to.

Opponent field goal %...44.8% #14 SEC #228 NCAA:
This is alarming considering the fact that our coach tries to portray himself as defensive minded. The most frustrating part of this is that we have seen this team play great defense at times, just rarely for a full game. In order for this team to be succesful that number is going to have to change.

Nice work BTO. Agree with your points. If we can get the defense where it should be, this team will be very good, and a nightmare for any opponent.

Maybe the defensive rebounding is that bad because of the strict stay in front of your man D. Our defense is to stay in front and we don't see a lot of crashing the boards. Teams that play some zone have a much more advantage to have a better stat for D rebounding even without having superior rebounders like we have.

The theme for this team seems to have been thus far, a tale of two halves.

Concerning opponent FG%, I'd guess if you averaged our good halves, we are holding opponents to 30-35%, but in our bad halves, we are allowing 50-55%.

We need more good halves. In other news, water is wet.

Bto,

No arguing but where does the Possesion per game stat stand??

Total average is 63 possessions per game, which ranks last in the SEC and 333 in the NCAA. The reason I didn't include that is because pace of game doesn't really have much of an effect on W/L, like say efficiency stats or turnovers. Wisconsin has almost identical possessions stats as us and is undefeated and about to be ranked in the top 5.

In our 6 wins: 62 possessions per game average

In our 2 losses: 67 possessions per game average

The 2 losses, our 2 highest possession games, were also our 2 worst offensive efficiency games.

Good work, Bleeder. The D will come around. The sooner the better.. 1/7 looms around the corner. Something about the conference schedule is like a menace on the horizon. Hopefully, more so for the other guys.

That's a HUGE game too, depending on how we do over the next 6 games especially. Win your first conference game, on the road, against one of the better teams in the conference....would be a great start to SEC play.

Great post BTO. First the offensive stats are exciting and then the defensive stats are are deflating. Overall, the numbers present a good overview of what's working and what's not working IMO.

More good:

Josh Richardson's 3pt is 46.2% shooting 6-13. Small sample size but clearly better than previous years.
