Sounds like a case of Locked keys in the car

No. My stepson was trying to come home a back way from his new job and wound up at a dead end. Backing up he let the back wheel get off the road into the edge of a man's yard. Tire was in a pile of leaves. Owner of house comes out and calls the law.

Police show up and call Fountain City wrecker service. Pulls him out. About ten feet total. Charges him $100. Operater of truck told him that if he'd called it would have been around half of that. Something isn't kosher about that.

I feel like there's something missing from part of this story.

He's not a teenager. Thirty seven to be exact. Police weren't part of the story after wrecker arrived. What's missing is the extra forty or fifty dollars.

That's the way it works in Blount county. They make the wrecker call and the price triples, but the cops do tell you this before they make the call.

I agree, when my son had a wreck a few years ago he let the cops make the call. The bill was nearly three hundred bucks for a 5 mile tow.

Some departments (actually, it tends to be the entire city government) are under contract to call a specific company. However, they also (should) allow you to call someone of your own choice.

Somebody in the local government is getting money out of this. Policing for profit.

The owner of the yard ought to have his lawn sprayed with RoundUp.

Why does it cost more depending on who makes the call? That's the very definition of racketeering.

You can't insinuate that about our law enforcement agencies and local governments. They are beyond reproach. Just pay your fine, sheep, and let these people do their jobs...
