Someone answer this question about the playoff system

Me and some friends are debating, and this is a pretty elementary question but now I'm doubting myself.

So obviously it's a 4 team playoff. The top 4 are selected blah blah blah. But what does this mean for the other teams? Is there still a post season for Tennessee if we go 9-3? Or is the entire bowl system just getting scratched and if you don't make the 4 team playoff your season is over?

i think its the same system as we have, they just added one more game after the bowls. The game goes to the city that is the highest bidder.
