I want to see AJ Johnson's hand in the dirt next year. Instead of trying to trim him down and make him faster, pack on some muscle and extra weight and let's see him fly off the edge. He's proven he has the motor to do it. The guy just doesn't have the speed to be a mike in the SEC. He has his best game of the year (minus the celebration penalty) Saturday, but candy doesn't have speed.

I'd love to see the beast swallow the QB on a speed rush off the edge game after game.

I actually agree with this. Put on about 40 and I believe he would excel at the DE.

I also would not be shocked if it happened with this LB class coming and Maggit coming back.

He is a true vol. He does, however, lack the speed needed for a MLB. He might fit in a 3-4 system better as one of the ILB's. I think he has a future in the NFL. I am not sure coming back as a 4-3 MLB will help his development. His best option might be to opt for draft and see if he can get picked up somewhere with a proven 3-4 DC.

AJ opposite Vereen would be a fun tandem to watch.

With another 15 to 20 lbs on him, Johnson really could be a solid DE. He's a very smart football player, but he lacks the speed to be an elite LB.

Pittsburg Steelers starting ILB's
Timmons 6'2''/ 234 lbs
Williams 6'1''/ 250 lbs

AJ listed at 6'2''/ 243 lbs
I am no NFL DC, but it seems AJ might fit with a 3-4 as a ILB.
I do not see him benefiting by adding/ "trying to add" 40 lbs to his frame. I think that only slows him down even more. What do you guys think?

DE's in the NFL are closer to 280-290 range. That would mean closer to 40lbs he would have to gain. I don't see a benefit for his long term success by that. Anyway, I like watching him. The "pump" fake during Vandy would have gotten just about anyone. Where was the DE and OLB?

Interesting idea that I've not thought about. I think AJ is definitely a 34 Mike, with the ability to play in the NFL. He does not have the speed to play in a 4-3 against SEC competition, way too much ground to cover, particularly as a 4-3 LB. I love the guy, he flies to the ball and will lower the boom, but he is just not very good in pass coverage or when rb's get the edge. He has the talent to be a stud DE in the 43, but do you really think he's going to come back, put on weight, and then learn a new position? I doubt it...As productive as he's been stopping the run, i definitely think a 34 NFL takes a mid round shot at him if he comes out....I just don't know how much he can improve as a 43 LB if he comes back

AJ's instincts are undeniable. He is always close to the ball and is in on more tackles than any other defensive player. He may indeed fit a mike position for someone at the next level but at this point unless he is protected by others around him with speed, he gets beaten badly on plays off tackle. Even the plays he makes between the tackles a often 1-2 yards down field. He makes very few TFL's or for no gain and has a hard time getting into the backfield, play side. I want what's best for him and want him to realize any dreams he has of playing at the next level. However, his dreams may lead him some where else other than MLB.

Doesn't have the burst to be a rush end. Not a chance he changes positions IMHO.

I am also excited to see the best Oline in the SEC in the PROS next year . That means after 4 or 5 years they will have continuity in coaching . Hopefully . I am ready for all of them to move on up .

if we had ONE defensive end that knew how to contain he would have 30 tackles a game. if we knew how to play discipline contain he would not have to run to the sideline to make every tackle!
