It sucks that this kid's life is basically ruined.

We've lost our minds about stranger danger and this stuff.

The positive consent movement on college campuses is another example of our collective over reaction

In TN, it is discretionary whether or not a person has to be put on the registry for statutory rape, and there is also a narrowly defined mitigated statutory rape for this type of thing.

I believe TN also now allows for a defense if the victim lies about her age. Tough story.

“the registry has become so diluted that you can’t identify the truly dangerous, and that in itself is dangerous.”

This is the scary part.

IMO this is all on him, and it could of easily been avoided. When your considered a legal adult, and you're talking to a young girl and planning on having sex with her, you better do your homework. All you have to do is ask to see their drivers license or some other proof of their age. I'm 25, and just a few years ago I would still entertain the idea of dating a 18-19 year old. Before I done anything sexual with any of those girls, I always looked at their drivers license.

I was sneaky about it though. I wouldn't flat out say I want to see your id to verify your age. I would normally go to a drive-thru at a store and get a can of dip. I would tell the girl I forgot my wallet and that she'd have to show the cashier hers. Once she got it out, I'd be like " let me see your drivers license, you look a lot different in person". I'd then just simply look a their birth date on the card.

Nothing sets the mood like 'Hey Baby, show me your papers'...
