Sonny coaching at CAL always seemed odd to me for some reason.
Yep. That was probably the most oil and water hire that I can remember offhand. It never made much sense.

College football in a lot of ways is still a sport with regional/parochial qualities. Coaching "fit" is really important, and there are a lot of successful coaches who I think would have only been successful at their current school because of that.

That was oil and water too, but Harsin at least came from a mid-size city in a rural, conservative part of the country and from a school that really wants to be good at football.

Sonny was a Texas high school and college coach who went to Berkeley, and was the HC at an institution that, let's be real, doesn't think football is all that important. That's an incredibly stark difference. It is shocking to me that Cal saw him as an attractive candidate for them in the first place.
