There is obviously a real reason he interviewed for HC positions unsuccessfully for years. He has validated those suspicions repeatedly now.
Did very well at Louisville. Texas wasn’t a fit and it broke him.

I think he would have fit well at the real UT when we almost had him........

I'm not a social justice warrior, but I do think his race had a predetermined notion about him in the Texas Longhorn community. Of course following a school all time great usually doesn't bode well for a coach.

Having him in the SEC where he knows the football and opponents was a plus compared to Texas and Big 12
Having the pipeline of recruiting at the school in place where he could simply grow it was a plus compared to Texas and Big 12
Having a chip on his shoulder with the program that skipped him over and getting to play that program every year was a plus compared to Texas and Big 12

Looking back, I really don't get why he took the Texas job.... I really don't.

You are definitely right to say that job broke him. Crazy.

I think he’s going to need at least a couple of seasons as a DC before he gets back into the pool.

If I was him and getting a good buyout, I would just go attach myself to the next up and comer or hot mid major name as their DC......

I feel like Strong could fit in the DC ranks and stay there like Todd Grantham (EDIT: Also Dave Aranda) has done. I would love to see Strong turn his head coaching career around, but I think he'd be smart to just take a DC job and then try to get back in the head coaching ranks after a couple of years.

Failing at Texas isn’t a career killer. Not MEETING EXPECTATIONS at USF necessitates a career re-evaluation. As you stated, maybe he can recharge the batteries and make another run but in the meantime the line forms to the left for a well paying DC opportunity.

Maybe Strong gets hired as the defensive coordinator at Arkansas, Missouri or Mississippi or Florida State.
