We need to seriously improve. Wilhoit sucks other than his kick against UF last year. He sucked the rest of the season after that last year. We had a FG blocked, fumbled a punt, faked a punt and failed, and our kick returns continue to be the worst in the nation. I cheer when we make the 20.
I raise by beer to Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech who every year have the best Special Teams in the nation...and they win ball games with it. They run kicks back, they block kicks...they are F'kin solid.

It should. Some (more like most) ST errors are out of stupidity and just shouldnt happen. Drives ya nuts.

Weird thing is that UF's ST's basically stunk it up for the first two games. Glad they showed up tonight!

You guys beat me to the punch. Everybody has been talkin' all week about the offense and defense. I personally stated the the defense had to set the tone for this game and the offense would do just fine. We all overlooked the special teams and that's what bit us in the a$$. I'm guessing the coaching staff will have to prepare the "entire" team from now on. Also what do ya'll think about taking the second week off to get ready for Florida. Personally I think it's way too early in the season to have a bye week....

I think another game before UF would have done wonders. Oh well.

I'm agreeing %100 bloody. Taking off the second week every year is counter productive regardless of the record the past few years. During the Darth Visor years the record speaks for itself. It just seems to me the second week is very important for the team to jell and establish some momentum..

I'll third you and Hman's vote.

I think it is about as stupid as some of our O play calling and personel decisions tonight to take a bye the week before UF.

Byes should be about rest & preperation, and taking a bye in the 2nd week pretty much tells your team they suck so bad they need the break to compete after just one week into the season.

Fulmer is great
Sanders is great

But they are currently acting like ignorant jerk-offs, and the team has been refleting it for years- Excellence marred by choking just when it hurts most.

I agree. Special Teams was aweful last night. In a game like Florida, you've got to bring your A game, at all levels. This includes Offense, Defense and SPECIAL TEAMS!! If last night was our "A Game", we need to make some serious adjustments. I said this in another post, but I honestly believe so much of it was "lack of focus". These guys have got to get their heads in the game and rise to the occasion.

I wish I could be surprised by what I saw last night....but I'm not.

....these are the same problems that we've had for a long time. Hell, we won the national title with these guys but it took, the sun, moon, stars and every dumb luck, accidental, what in the hell moment you could think of for us to get it done.

Fulmer relies solely on his team's talent to break games open, not his own adjustments. No team of our stature should ever have special team problems like we did last night.... And It's ultmately fulmer's responsibility to make sure that it's done.

He gets the glory when we win.....he can take the crap for when we lose.

He's a big boy, he can take it.

The kicking game is where games are won and lost. That was one of the General's maxims, and it certainly proved to be true last night. That may have been the worst ST performance I've EVER seen by a Vol team.

Exactly!!! That would be a perfect week to schedule one of those pick-a-score cupcake u games to work out all the kinks. For the past 15 years or so, we've had an open week before the Fla game while they use that week to play the ACME school for the pitiful, and they usually come out on top.

Actually in the 90's we used to play 2 games before Florida. And we need to start doing it again.
Our first two games should be North Texas and Louisiana-Monroe.

Different year, same story. D plays hard, but can't make a big play, or stop a third and long... the O is ineffective, and the SPECIAL TEAMS consistently put the other team in good field position.

Special teams were horrid last night.
