"As the Vols continue preparation for Saturday's must-win matchup with in-state foe Vanderbilt, linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen is focusing on the Commodores' run game. . . . "Out of one personnel group they can run five different formations and five different schemes at you. They do a good job with the personnel they have. Our challenge this week is to make sure we can stop the run." Thigpen plans on digging deeper into his linebacking corps to do that this weekend, and mentioned freshman Jalen Reeves-Maybin as the likely beneficiary. Reeves-Maybin has made his presence felt in his rookie season, racking up a team-leading nine special teams tackles. He also saw a great deal of defensive action last time out, posting three tackles - all on defense - against Auburn.

Thigpen believes it to be Reeves-Maybin's makeup off the field that has translated into success on the gridiron. "He's a smart kid - he really is," said Thigpen. "He takes a lot of pride in what he does and is probably one of the most cerebral kids we have on our football team. . . . He doesn't miss many assignments. . . . I'm looking forward to watching him grow as a young player" (#VolReport: Eyes On Five - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics).

I'm seeing a trend here..

Reeves or Maybin - Can't decide
Linebacker or Defensive Back - Can't decide

Would be great at DB...Will be SPECIAL at LB :shades:

Agree wholeheartedly. JRM may be fast enough to be an effective DB but he is a fast LB and UT needs to get faster on the field in a hurry. I'm expecting our future roster to mirror Chavis' CBs to Ss, Ss to LBs, LBs to DEs, and DEs to DTs strategy.

OK - now we see that Butch's first class has some talent such that many of them can play well as true freshmen. So he adds this even more outstanding recruiting class and even more will be of a quality that can contribute as true freshmen to go with their brothers of this season. So the odds of our Vols returning to the top where they belong is getting greater with each passing day.

Brick by brick.

Think he is fast enough to cover receivers at LB, where we can sure use the help! Hope he sees more time there. JMO.

This is one of the things that has me really excited about the future. Coach Jones has brought in some tremendous talent. Look at how many true freshmen are making an impact this season. It's not just by necessity either. Many have earned their playing time. Looks to only get better!

Simple. JRM takes out the 1st kick returner at the 5 with a decleater, however on the way down he tombstone's then teabags Franklin on the sideline! Announcers are amazed by his speed and ability to shed blocks!

You dont "have angles"

Completely false, a slow player can be made look faster by taking a proper angle, hit him where he is goin and not where he is, angles can also make a fast player looks slow, take angle that will leave you running behind the ball carrier and you have killed yourself.

JRM should have been playing more on defensive prior to the last game. He has game speed and a nose for the ball. I haven't understood why they have not been playing him. Some say lack of experience or not comfortable with the defensive scheme. All I know is the guy can play. And we need our best players on the field.

If they don't resolve the DL and especially McCullers getting pushed 6-10 yards off the LOS... it won't matter what angles the LB's take or how fast they are.

People trashing the LB's need to go back and watch the DL play more closely. They're job is to keep the LB's clean... and they're doing it extremely poorly.

This is the truth. People assume that just because big Mac is big that he is doing a great job. Well, he isn't, because he doesn't try. We got much better push on the DL with Greg Clark and Danny O'brien in the game. I'm hoping we see even better DL play with Carr maybe getting some snaps this weekend.

I am so glad to see him getting more playing time. I didn't know if he would be a safety or a LB. I realize it takes freshman time to learn the playbook/system, but #34 looks AWESOME on the field. He has the "nose for the ball" and the speed to get there. I can't wait to see him on the field. Some people just have "it" and I think he has it.
GBO.
