Sonny painted Pearl as a pretty sympathetic figure saying that the SEC has this type of effect on its coaches. He basically said that it was his experience that if you didn't seriously bend the rules in recruiting, Kentucky would run you out of the league. He followed that up by saying, "That's exactly what happened to me." I thought this was interesting. Thoughts?

So now youre blaming Kentucky?

The Pearl situation is not bad because he broke the rules nor is it because he was caught breaking them. The only reason its bad is because of the lying and cover-up attempt.

I'm not blaming anybody. Try reading. I simply was relaying what Sonny Smith says. I have no idea if what he said is true or not true. And I have never blamed UK for what Pearl did.

I poorly worded that. I intended to refer to Mr. Smith.

I think most big time programs "bend" the rules. but the lying is hard to sympathize with.

Kinda like Calapari did/does? He won't ever get caught at UK because he's the golden goose now.

He might get caught but he wont lie to them about the small things at least. If Cal lies about things its because its a "damned if you do damned if you dont ordeal." Pearl lied about stuff that would have been a slap on the wrist more than likely.

i personally refuse to believe that lying about a puny violation is somehow worse or some line coaches know not to cross, like it's as bad as academic fraud, paying players, or some other major violation. i bet they lie all the time about various things.

He always tells the truth!! Like I didnt know DRose's SAT score was too low and I didnt know J Wall didnt pass math and I didnt know he was paid to play in turkey!

The NCAA could not prove he knew any of this though. The respective universities accepted the transcripts therefore he could simply pass blame on them. I know he cheats but he does things that cant be traced and are easily covered up.

Sonny was getting at that UK has cheated for years, and it isn't much different now than when he was at Auburn coaching Barkley. He was not directing what he was saying at Calipari.

No, he'll just run off to China and hide, leaving the university to face the hearing on their own.

coaches break rules all the time. Basketball is worse than football because there is no other way to survive in basketball. it is ruthless in recruiting.

Just the way it is. You just have to be careful how you do it and be sure not to piss off your peer coaches around the country and league. you don't want coaches turning you in or you will get investigated.

just the way things are. that would be my thoughts.

Keep on stepping in do-do, sooner or later you'll smell like do-do.
