Didn't see this posted already:

Steve Spurrier of South Carolina Gamecocks gets raise to $4 million, extension through 2018 season - ESPN

South Carolina's Steve Spurrier will be among the nation's 10 highest-paid coaches after university trustees approved a pay raise to $4 million per year Thursday.

In addition, the contract for the 68-year-old Spurrier was extended by one year through the 2018 season.

Interesting he will serve as Special Assistant to the AD after he stops coaching. At age 72? Figured he'd want to be retired and spending time on the beach or hanging out in the ESPN booth at that point.

Spurrier will be making a million less than Kevin Sumlin.

That's screwed up.

His name wasn't tossed around for the USC job though. At least not in public.

I figure he'll retire at USCe and has made it known he's happy there.

I totally understand why Sumlin got a bigger raise than Spurrier. But it's a great example of the screwed up nature of college coaching contracts. It's not really a merit-based system.

Correct.

Odds Spurrier is still coaching in 2018?

I predicted he'd retire a few years back. All he's done is kept going, and producing the best seasons in USCe history.

So I'm not going to even guess when it comes to the OBC.

Agree and even worse than the lack of merit based contracts is the buyouts. The pre-negotiated "you still have to pay me even if I suck" buyout clause has always irritated me. But that's the way Universities operate whether it be tenure for Professors or the buyouts. Merit and performance is held in little regard when discussing pay.

I don't see that happening USCjr will never will a NC.

I agree. The guy could do it if he had the drive like he did at Florida, but he just doesn't seem to have it. He's still a better coach than most.

They've gone 11-2 several years in a row. They're right on the verge of getting in, I definitely wouldn't count them out just because "it's South Carolina"

Imo that's their peak. Obviously that's good but they're not elite and imo never will be.

I would say spurrier is elite but he won't win a N.C. at usce

Let's be honest though, they were one play away from going to the SEC CG this year (thank you North!)

I'm not saying they would have knocked off Auburn, but I don't put anything past an OBC team.

A few years ago I would've said they'll never win the East. "Spurrier's elite, but he won't win the East at USC."

Never say never. The odds of him winning the NC at USC are low, just like they are low at every school. Every year, only one can win.

I actually didn't think he would be around past next season myself.

I'm surprised he's still coaching as well. Figured he'd be on the Sr PGA by now. Or at least on the links somewhere. I still chuckle about the time Archie and Peyton were on a recruiting visit and the ole ball coach wanted to show Peyton something. PM thought it was going to be his Heisman. Turned out to be a hole in one golf ball.

I think that Spurrier sticks around because he really enjoys beating dabo and clemson. The day he loses to dabo, then I think he'll take that as a sign to consider hanging it up.

And UT in the same season.
