Welcome to AJC! | ajc.com

If you followed the Jonathan Davis thread, you saw that Spurrier had pulled a scholarship offer to Davis after assistant coach Ron Cooper took a job at LSU.

It's not unprecedented, but it's nice to hear Spurrier is no longer welcome at the school.

*edit* spaced out on this one...Tucker IS in Georgia, not South Carolina. I knew this, but must now implement a "no posting 20mins after waking up rule"

Tucker High is in Atlanta, not SC.

Also its a "Target" rich environment, so this may hurt in the long run

I think you might have misinterpreted the in-state part, AJC was referring to Tucker, a Georgia school.

I think Little USC has plateaued under Spurrier. I know they had a decent season by their standards(8-5 I believe) but the OBC just cannot recruit as easily as he did at Fla. He has top 15 classes but they are not producing like his top 5 classes were at Fla. Now, asistant coaches are jumping ship for lateral position at other school. That would have never happened at FLA. It will interesting to see what the next two years hold, I believe the OBC will be feed up and retire in 3.

The Ole Ball coach is quickly traveling the road to in obscurity as a threat in the SEC. Its really looking like the beginning of the end. Hope he can milk a few more Under-Armour commercials before his tenure is over.

Scout article on Davis' scholarship being withdrawn---

"The news hit Knoxville fast, and just as fast as it did, it found new Tennessee D-Coordinator Monte Kiffin tearing up the interstate to Tucker. Davis who was still upset, was surprised to see Kiffin at his home.

“He was very impressive and I enjoyed the visit," said Davis who is now shopping for a new college to play for. The Vols have a long standing relationship with Tucker High and Coach Stephens."

can anyone name a South Carolina quarterback to play in the NFL? can anyone name a player who has given an identity to the program? outside of Spurrier, I can't think of anyone---player or coach---to give a face to that school.

oh wait...I got one...

Dan Reeves played there too, but he made his name as a coach.

Their list of all-time greats could only be weaker than...I dunno....Vanderbilt maybe? Feel free to make a case.

Taneyhill! Nice picture. Wasn't he responsible for more TD passes to the other team in most games? I remember all the Cock fans with hats with ponytails when he was the QB.

He has one top 15 class which was no.6 in 2007. Every other class he's had here (besides this one) has been 20-25 which is still behind most of the SEC.

His assistant coaches didn't jump for lateral positions at UF because he was on top of the SEC at UF....think about it.

I think that's the point he was making?

You are for some reason trying to reinterpret why he said it, though?

Now that he's not on top of the SEC, everyone's jumping ship. I think we all understand that.

I think we looked at that statement in different ways. As far as the Johnathan Davis situation goes, 3 things factored into our decision:

the coach that recruited him left (cooper)
we're loaded at safety
he has some character issues

If yall want him, go ahead. He's a great talent but you better hope you don't have any problems with him.

^why did u offer the kid if u were loaded at his position & he had character issues. he got a raw deal plain & simple.

He committed very early when weren't loaded at safeties.

Cooper can be to blame for it. Our staff didn't want him but Cooper did. Read below...

http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-footbal...-more-bizarre/

New information: According to the Charleston Post and Courier on Sunday night, Davis was offered by South Carolina assistant Ron Cooper against the wishes of the staff. Travis Haney reports that “I’d been told in the past that Cooper was told, rather pointedly, not to take Davis. The decision had been made not to take him. Then, one day, at a recruiting meeting in which the main board is assessed, Cooper pipes up and says Davis is a commitment. Those in the room were said to be stunned.”

so cooper ran the show? another typical classless move by spurrier. at least the kid wasnt there 3 or 4 yrs before spurrier asked him to leave to make room for other recruits.

I guess if CMK went to see him then Reeves must have not said it was a bad idea since he would have been a part of the "staff" that was stunned, right?

I wish we couldve handled the situation better too. But if you like having guys like that on your team then please go ahead and have him.

Cooper was the only one on the staff that wanted him. The kid is an arrogant butt hole with a bad attitude. The staff believes that in the long run it will be better without him. Besides this would be the first time we ever got a recruit out of Tucker. Being banned from this school won't hurt.
