I love how it's "not mandatory" but the coach tells you that you're in danger of not being on the team if you don't volunteer!

i smell Lou Holtz somewhere around this....yeah, sure they may not be giving all out right now, but it's probalby not as bad as he'd like everyone to think....

more than likely a motivational tactic going into fall camp....

I have no problem at all with that. If the only time a player works is when its mandatory, a coach is perfectly reasonable in making the assumption that the player lacks the internal motivation to succeed.

Not exactly what I meant. I was commenting more on the semantics - the coach is discussing real sanctions tied directly to non-participation in voluntary activities -- it starts to sound like defacto mandatory. Kinda like when I tell my students they don't have to take the test - it's not mandatory - they'll just fail but it's their choice :p

Like you, I've got no problem with judging the player for not showing "internal" motivation.
